Fellow Runners,

With cooler autumnal climes upon us we had a terrific turn-out last Thursday. As Giles, in a varnished old London voice exclaimed: ‘A cooler evening—great for a run!’ Gareth agreed: ‘Perfect evening for a cruise over the bridge. Last KR [run] before the London Marathon. This time next week I’ll be in London recovering from dinner/drinks with Karen Lang. That’ll probably be tougher than the race!’ We wish Gareth the very best on both fronts.* Although  Dave C  enjoyed the ‘Lovely cool evening’ he expressed ‘shame about the pedestrians on our path!’ Ann K, meanwhile, ‘Enjoyed a nice run with Anne until we saw a Sydney rat in our path.’** While this was going on Carolina ‘got lost’; Brad ‘ran a PB’, despite ‘not feeling like it'; and Kasey ‘didn’t run but enjoyed being with the group!’ (Running, as I have said, is not a field where all agree, and an objective essay on it would be a poor thing indeed.) Partners in crime, Peter and Robin, left us with the following entry in the KR Log Book: ‘(12.54 kel 1:06:23 e 5.18) (Tottometer e 6.j/10).’ On initial scrutiny this is nothing but a farrago of incomprehension; however, according to the official Tottometer website, there exists an explanation of sorts: Totty is that which is measured on the Tottometer, a new technology which claims to be able to provide exact readouts of the level of human eyecandy at any point in both temporal and geographical space.’*** On matters of measurement—this time of a more precise nature—Adam mapped-out an 8km option for those looking at running a slightly longer course on a Thursday night. He explains: ‘Essentially, start out the same as normal but instead of catching the lift continue around Circular Quay, around the Park Hyatt, past the Siebel and then take the road to the left (uphill) when you get to the smashed-car installation. From this point, head up alongside Observatory Hill where you will then reconnect with the Harbour Bridge via the access tunnel.’ Anyway, here is the newly-minted 8km course as it appears on an aerial  map: <www.connect.garmin.com/activity/167721809>.  Adam would also like to remind you of the KR Kirribilli to Manly Run which is coming up shortly (Sunday 28 April, see below). --------------------------------------------------

Well, once again, we hope that you can join us this evening. Whether you have to escape from a bored board meeting—or work more generally—we hope that you can make it.**** Before we close, though, and to inspire you all, Ruud leaves us with an account of the Canberra Half Marathon (which he completed last Sunday):  ‘. . . I finally managed to beat the 2 hour mark, YES!! How good did that feel! It was a misty morning but the sun didn’t take long to come out and warm us . . . very scenic running around Parliament House, old Parliament House and Lake Griffith.’

OK, we’ll see you soon!

Best wishes,

Dave

* The London Marathon takes place in two days’ time (22 April) see < www.virginlondonmarathon.com>.

**  If you are fond of rodents there is (would you believe) an Australian Rodent Fancier’ Society of NSW Inc. See <www.ausfsnsw.com>. In addition to this there exists a Sydney Royal Rat and Mouse Show, a competition which ‘attracts around 250 entries, with over 11 types of breeds and classes.’ See < www.sydneyroyal.com.au/RatMouse.htm>.

**** There are very few instances that can justify the need to work beyond 6 pm (even world class athletes don’t do it) . . .  just get it out of the bloody way! As the brilliant playwright Oscar Wilde provocatively put it: ‘Work is the refuge of people who have nothing better to do.’

KR Ski trip 19-24/26 August (Gareth)

After the success of last year's inaugural ski trip, we're planning a larger scale effort for 2012, and are hoping to get a big group together to go to Thredbo. All levels of skier and boarder are welcome, from total beginners to experts. The tentative plan at this stage is to have a week's rest following the City2Surf (Sun Aug 12) then go for 4-6 days skiing from Sun 19th - Fri 24th / Sun 26th. Depending on numbers we'll rent one or more lodges / apartments to make the apres-ski easier. Indicative costs would be around $700-1000 per head for the accommodation, and about $100-120/day for ski pass / lessons / equipment hire, depending on what you need. We can pool cars and cook together, so transport and meals should be cheap. The only likely blow-out will be the wine bill :)If you're (even vaguely) interested please let me know (gda...@sxvp.com) so I can put you on the 'maybe' list. I'll firm up numbers over the next month or so and book early to get a good place.  If you want to find out more or discuss options just catch me on a Thursday night . Hope to see you there. Gareth
