Fellow Runners,

We had a another very sizeable turn-out last Thursday, another ‘beautiful night’* (for how much longer will this fine weather last?).  Having said that, though, we were a bit short on comments owing to the fact that the KR Log Book didn’t make a full lap of HQ. The few that we do have, however, are worth conveying for reasons of instruction and interest. So we start with Ann K who—surprise, surprise—decided to avoid intervals this week:  ‘Had an easy day. Hips killed because of too many Ks.’ Megan also found the run ‘really hard. Will be better next week.’ Amanda B, on the other hand, found the run both pleasing and cathartic: ‘Long day at work. Pleased to release some energy running!’ Di, too, had a highly enjoyable run: ‘Almost as good as the Nike 13 K Centennial Park race!’ As this was going on a fired-up Giles attempted a PB  . . . yet, alas, this was not to be:  ‘too full of chocolate cake!’ Perhaps a PB is within his grasp this evening (?) Writing with verve and erudition Angus points out that he set a ‘PLPB’—a ‘Post Lunch PB’.** Our Norwegian friend Alexander managed ‘A bit better this time. Still getting exhausted from the running.’ We’d like to welcome Richard A, who, from the outset, appears rather (overly?) committed: ‘First time, thanks guys, will get faster. Will be about until September and aim to run every week!’ OK, that running calendar once again (it is worth highlighting that the SMH Half is this Sunday and, following tradition, we will meet after the event at the Woolloomooloo Bay Hotel from 10 am:***

** The stupidest comment regarding lunch surely belongs to the film director Oliver Stone who claimed ‘lunch is for wimps’. Not only is it a claim in contempt of a basic physiological need it also disparages the social value of lunch. The word ‘lunch’ has been in use since 1823 (a contraction of ‘luncheon’); the practice of lunch, well, much longer.  See OED.

KR Ski trip 19-24/26 August (Gareth)

After the success of last year's inaugural ski trip, we're planning a larger scale effort for 2012, and are hoping to get a big group together to go to Thredbo. All levels of skier and boarder are welcome, from total beginners to experts. The tentative plan at this stage is to have a week's rest following the City2Surf (Sun Aug 12) then go for 4-6 days skiing from Sun 19th - Fri 24th / Sun 26th. Depending on numbers we'll rent one or more lodges / apartments to make the apres-ski easier. Indicative costs would be around $700-1000 per head for the accommodation, and about $100-120/day for ski pass / lessons / equipment hire, depending on what you need. We can pool cars and cook together, so transport and meals should be cheap. The only likely blow-out will be the wine bill :)If you're (even vaguely) interested please let me know (gda...@sxvp.com) so I can put you on the 'maybe' list. I'll firm up numbers over the next month or so and book early to get a good place.  If you want to find out more or discuss options just catch me on a Thursday night . Hope to see you there. Gareth
