Fellow Runners,
We had another great turn-out last week with twenty-plus turning out for a trot. As an animated Megan put it—‘Great night, great run.’ Whether it was due to the ‘great night’ or something less propitious, Peter R was lost for words. ‘Dunno what to say,' he said, his face unclouded by thought. Paul T and Raul were also lost for words, eliciting nothing more than a stroke of punctuation [!] and an emoticon [J].* Commanding admiration were some remarkable performances. Kieran, for example, not only set a PB but ‘improved by 30 seconds per km.’ Amanda also improved on her PB and by a whopping two minutes: ‘Thanks to the interval girls for the encouragement.’ One of these ‘interval girls’ was a certain Ann K: ‘Enjoyed doing intervals tonight. Had five followers, may have had more. Pain will only have you faster.’ It will be interesting to note just how many will follow the stoic tune of this Pied Piper tonight. Paul, who ‘ran [his] own race’ last week may not be one of them. Then again, his penchant for solo running could be a one-off (he was ‘exhausted’ from Anzac Day, he so informs). An ever-conscientious Dave C was ‘Just short of a PB . . . But I don’t care. I ran quite enough for one day!’ Others, it can be argued, were more interested in the aesthetic than the athletic, such as Jen: ‘Ran from home, beautiful foreshore development between Five Fingers and Anzac Bridge. It was a nice surprise.’** In the meantime, having completed her run, Mel was enjoying ‘happy cider times’ back at HQ. (HQ, as we’ve come to appreciate, is forever an oasis of good nature and joie de vivre.) And then there was Giles, who, ‘Finished with Holmesy breathing down my neck.’ We had an international guest with us that evening, Alex, a very able runner—welcome! Hailing all the way from Norway he is ‘looking forward to some nice runs with you guys!’*** It was good to see Tyson back, too, after a lengthy spell from running: ‘First run for the year. Sweet.’ OK, some events, again, to think about:

* Emoticon usage can be traced to the nineteenth century (the first typographical emoticons appeared in the satirical magazine Puck in 1881). It was the Greeks, though, who first came up with a system of punctuation; this became refined after the advent of the printing press (c.1440 AD). For a good historical overview and an easy primer see G. King, Improve Your Punctuation, Collins, Glasgow, 2009.

KR Ski trip 19-24/26 August (Gareth)
After the success of last year's inaugural ski trip, we're planning a larger scale effort for 2012, and are hoping to get a big group together to go to Thredbo. All levels of skier and boarder are welcome, from total beginners to experts. The tentative plan at this stage is to have a week's rest following the City2Surf (Sun Aug 12) then go for 4-6 days skiing from Sun 19th - Fri 24th / Sun 26th. Depending on numbers we'll rent one or more lodges / apartments to make the apres-ski easier. Indicative costs would be around $700-1000 per head for the accommodation, and about $100-120/day for ski pass / lessons / equipment hire, depending on what you need. We can pool cars and cook together, so transport and meals should be cheap. The only likely blow-out will be the wine bill :)If you're (even vaguely) interested please let me know (gda...@sxvp.com) so I can put you on the 'maybe' list. I'll firm up numbers over the next month or so and book early to get a good place. If you want to find out more or discuss options just catch me on a Thursday night . Hope to see you there. Gareth
