Fellow Runners,
A solid turn-out last week given the overcast conditions. As Di put it, ‘Glad the rain held off.’ It was Di, too, who graciously accompanied Michelle—‘Had a great first run. Everyone was really nice and welcoming. Will definitely be back.’ It was Dominic’s ‘first run’ also: ‘Hurt a bit, could do better.’ Rob S, despite running a blistering sub-26, was, at HQ at least, an expression of understatement: ‘Not too bad for an old guy!’ Running neck-to-neck with Rob was Gareth: ‘Owww! But wow—Rob set a blistering pace with his McHammer impressions: “U can’t touch this” indeed! The “old man’s” clearly back in form.’ Melissa, meanwhile, walked the course (having already spent an hour in the gym): ‘Enjoyed the remaining twilight evenings before the clocks go back.’ Charlie—who we’ve come to recognise as an ideas man par excellence (Thomas Edison* must be rolling in his grave)—had yet another: ‘Idea for a new business: A Jehovah’s Witness** Only Gym, called “Jehovah’s Fitness”. Sorry, I had to write that down before I forgot it. Great run, slowly getting some degree of form.’ We had, on that dark, tempestuous evening, an instance of perceived injustice. This took the form of Briony lodging an official complaint (whether it was lodged with the IAAF or the Court of Arbitration for Sport we are yet to find out): ‘This time [32.20] is being protested. A protest has been lodged. I can’t help it that I’m amazing! Great run, great to be back.’Ann K found herself ‘Slow and steady tonight. Karyn and I were really tired. Need to catch up on sleep.' By contrast Dave C was far from tired—‘getting excited about the KR Triathlon!’ As it transpired the Inaugural KR triathlon, staged Sunday, was a huge success. Dave C furnished the following report (replete with pictures, attached):
The Inaugural KR Triathlon took place under bright blue skies, which put everyone in a great mood - except Fiona, who exclaimed ‘oh no!’ We had nine full competitors (and two partial entries) for the run to Manly where we picked up our bikes, and from there it was a hard slog under the hot sun to North Sydney. I think it's fair to say most people were looking forward to this part the least, except possibly Gareth, who was so fast he beat the support car to the pool! Lots of KRs swam excellent times, myself excluded, but given that the triathlon was my motivation to learn to swim, I was very happy just to finish. Everyone enjoyed post event drinks (thanks Dave for the social fund contribution), and there were exclusively positive comments in the logbook, ranging from ‘great kick off of a tradition’ (Ruud) (no pressure there!), to ‘very very very proud of myself’ (Briony), to ‘my first amazing race! lots of fun’ (Adriana). It was wonderful to have so many first time triathletes, and thanks to everyone and our support crew for an amazing day!

We hope that you can join us this evening—‘tis a gorgeous day, a prefect prelude to the long weekend!
Best wishes,
Dave

* Thomas Edison (1847-1931) was one of the most prolific inventors in history. Charlie, it would seem, is hot on his heels.
** Given that Jehovah’s Witnesses have a reputation for being downright peculiar, it’s quite possible that they’d adopt Charlie’s idea. The peculiarity of the JW’s stems largely from a central tenet of their belief system, i.e. their refusal to accept blood transfusions. They forbid blood transfusions (even in a life-or-death situation) as ‘they consider [it to be] a violation of God’s law based on their interpretation of Acts 15: 28, 29.’ OK, well let’s turn to the passage in question: ‘The Holy Spirit and we have agreed not to put any other burden on you besides these necessary rules: eat no food that has been offered to idols; eat no blood; eat no animal that has been strangled; and keep yourselves from sexual immorality.’ To believe the ramblings of a Bronze Age tribesman is one thing, but to equate ‘eat no blood’ with ‘accept no blood transfusions’—well, it’s idiocy of the highest order.

KR Ski trip 19-24/26 August (Gareth)
After the success of last year's inaugural ski trip, we're planning a larger scale effort for 2012, and are hoping to get a big group together to go to Thredbo. All levels of skier and boarder are welcome, from total beginners to experts. The tentative plan at this stage is to have a week's rest following the City2Surf (Sun Aug 12) then go for 4-6 days skiing from Sun 19th - Fri 24th / Sun 26th. Depending on numbers we'll rent one or more lodges / apartments to make the apres-ski easier. Indicative costs would be around $700-1000 per head for the accommodation, and about $100-120/day for ski pass / lessons / equipment hire, depending on what you need. We can pool cars and cook together, so transport and meals should be cheap. The only likely blow-out will be the wine bill :)If you're (even vaguely) interested please let me know (gda...@sxvp.com) so I can put you on the 'maybe' list. I'll firm up numbers over the next month or so and book early to get a good place. If you want to find out more or discuss options just catch me on a Thursday night . Hope to see you there. Gareth
