I have a small dog, under 20 pounds who was attacked by raccoons in my
yard. I thought it might be good to let other homeowners know that
even in their backyards they have to be careful, and supervise their
pets.
Our vet told me our dog was very lucky, as they had her by the neck,
in the "kill" position and raised her up, ready to shake her. My son
was in the yard and screamed loudly and they dropped her. She had five
puncture wounds on her neck, and the vet was able to operate, clean
her wounds and stitch her up. She is healing nicely.
Although this happened late at night, we saw a raccoon waddle down our
cul de sac today in broad daylight. So, even letting your pets loose
in the day may put them at risk. And a fence does not keep them
out! They climb trees and can drop right in your yard.
I am not sure what to do, except warn neighbors not to let their cats
and dogs out without someone with them.
[Other ways to deter raccoons are never leave pet food outside, and
don't put food scraps in a compost pile that animals can get into.]

For the July 28 Highland Neighborhood Garage Sale, we were wondering
if anyone in the Highlands would like to volunteer to have items
dropped off (by other Highland residents) at their house, sell them on
July 28, and then donate the proceeds from the sale to Hopelink.
Whoever volunteers to be the Hopelink dropoff point would have to be
willing to try to sell the things, and then store the things until
either Hopelink or NWC (or probably both) picked them up. To make it
less confusing, that person would probably need to donate their own
sale proceeds to Hopelink as well (then we could have a sign that says
something like "All proceeds go to Hopelink"). If you are interested
in helping to raise money for Hopelink, please email,
Marib...@hotmail.com. Thanks!
