Below are links to my current drafts for some simple 4"x6" postcards to advertise KinkForAll DC. Suggestions, tweaks, etc. are welcome.

I ordered a run of a thousand for $57.25 (500 would have been $46.15). I've uploaded the final source files (Inkscape SVG) to the Google Group files for future reuse. Minor process detail: to upload it for printing, I ended up using "Export Bitmap..." (at 300 dpi) that produces a PNG, which I then converted to TIFF.

(Legal detail: I release the files under Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike 3.0 United States License; I'm unsure of the licensing of the SVG flame I used, though...)

Whoops, I meant to mention that they're estimated arrival is 10/13. If you're in the DC area and want a stack to distribute, let me know!

Nikolas,

These are awesome! :D

How would you feel about releasing the SVG sources into the public
domain? The KinkForAll flame-in-flame is, TTBOMK, public domain, so
your use of it is totally cool.

Typically, uploading files to the Google Group implicitly releases
them into the public domain, as well. See

http://wiki.KinkForAll.org/Legal

and the welcome message for this group at

http://groups.google.com/group/kinkforall

If you would not like to release the SVGs into the public domain, and
instead want to license them as CC-BY-SA-3.0-US, would you be all
right with removing them from the group and hosting the SVG files
yourself?

From a legal perspective, the only pertinent differences between a CC-
BY-SA-3.0 license and public domain is that you can't claim
attribution citations for the postcards and that you can't prevent
someone from selling the postcard designs or using them in work that
isn't re-shared.

These free font repositories are really cool. I didn't know these
existed. Thanks!

I don't mind re-licensing them; I wasn't aware of that CreativeCommons had a nice "public domain" statement, thanks!

The share-alike clause is an important difference. This would be completely unusable with, for example, a work under the GNU Free Documentation License 1.2.

There are other differences, but I don't think they're relevant.

This is sloppy, but probably adequate. A better approach would be to require a contributor license agreement.

Anywho...

You mean a public domain work would be completely unusable with work
licensed under the GNU FDL?

It's certainly ad-hoc, not sure if I'd describe it as "sloppy." :)

How could we improve this?

i think the best that can be (easily) done is e-mailing new contributors with an explanation of the policy. A notice when uploading, editing, etc. would be better, but I don't see a way to implement that.

Also, sorry I went on a mini-rant there. The amount of time and energy i've had to spend on licensing issues is, um, frustrating :)

I think that's a good suggestion and I'll spend some time looking into
that. Sadly, an emergency situation has just arisen[0] and I need to
deal with it very promptly, so I may not get to this in a timely
manner. If someone wants to grab the oars and start rowing in that
direction, I'd be grateful.

No worries—your rants have proven informative in the past. :) I find
the majority of legal issues I've encountered similarly…frustrating….

Hi Nikolas,

I really like the postcards.  The only question I had was do we know room numbers?  If so, should we put that in also so people know where to go in the high school?  Alternatively, we could put up signs or something at the event itself.

Take care,
Chris

Insert movie times and more without leaving Hotmail®. See how.

I was about to send an e-mail inquiring, but poked at the scheduling site one last time. Lo! Room numbers:
* Cafeteria
* Clrm C-111 (CU)
* Clrm C-112 (CU)
* Clrm C-114 (CU)

I already sent the design in for printing, so I can't change that. We can put up signs during the event, though.

Cheers,
-Nikolas
