NHC Summer Institute as an Everett Fellow

1. Davening this week:
We meet every Friday evening in KI's Rabb Chapel at 384 Harvard St. in Brookline. Our davening this week begins at 6:00pm with mincha, followed kabbalat shabbat and maariv.
Join us for Kiddush after services, sponsored by the KICKS Kiddush Fund. If you'd like to make a donation to the Kiddush fund, please send a check to KI with a note in the memo line that specifies KICKS Kiddush Fund. Thanks!

Mazel tov to Rachel Shuler and Jeff Klein on the birth of their daughter, Jules Gray Shuler Klein! Please sign up to bring the newly expanded family a meal here. If you can cook but can’t deliver the food to their home in Roxbury, get in touch with Stephanie who works near them. We look forward to meeting Jules and hearing anecdotes about her in future KICKS divrei torah.
3. Fermenting the Omer
Thursday April 26th, 6:30-9:30pm
Starting the second day of Passover we count the 50 days of the Omer until Shavuot. In ancient Israel, Jews brought an Omer (a biblical measurement) of barley to the temple as a sacrifice every day, signaling the beginning of the barley harvest, leading up to the wheat harvest on Shavuot. Barley, lacking adequate levels of gluten to make bread, has been viewed throughout the ages as an inferior grain. Luckily, there is an age-old tradition to use it to Brew Beer! This session will teach the ancient art of home-brewing in the modern kitchen. 4. Calling Birthright Alumni
Shabbat of May 11-12 is the 13th birthday of Birthright Israel. If you are an alum and would are interested in speaking for a few minutes at kiddush that week about the experience, please contact Stephanie.
5. KI Lag B'Omer Picnic
Thursday, May 10th 4:30 to 8:30 P.M.
Gather round the fire and CELEBRATE LAG B’OMER with the KI Family in KI’s beautiful Perlmutter Garden! The fun starts at 4:30 P.M. for the younger children. Live Klezmer music begins at 6:00 P.M. Menu: Grilled hot dogs, Veggie burgers, Chips, Salad, Desserts & Soft Drinks. $20 per family or $8 per individual. PLEASE RSVP to KI Office: 617-277-9155 or pa...@congki.org.
6. KI Shabbaton!
Rejuvenation and inspiration await as our community spends Shabbat together at Camp Ramah in Palmer, MA, June 15-17. Highlights of our weekend include a Saturday night bonfire (with s'mores!), spirited davening, a softball game, swimming, and a warm, welcoming sense of community. Applications are available here. Sign-up before April 27th for the regular rate - applications may be submitted after April 27th for an additional $25 fee per person, provided there is space remaining. Don't be left behind!

To Till and To Tend: Farming, Justice and Judaism
In this week-long, service learning experience, participants will explore the relationship between Judaism, agriculture and contemporary food justice issues. This unique seminar will include farm work, text study and meetings with activists, community leaders, and business people. On the farm, you will gain hands-on experience in sustainable agriculture techniques such as planting, harvesting and soil building. In the bet midrash (study hall), you will explore a variety of Jewish texts relating to contemporary environmental and food justice issues such as food security, worker rights, and land stewardship.
When: Sunday, June 3-Sunday, June 10, 2012
Where: Sustainable farms in the Greater Boston Area and Hebrew College, Newton, MA
Who: Anyone interested in the intersection of food, farming, justice and Judaism
How: Tuition is $1000 + transportation; generous fellowships are available.

Attend the NHC Summer Institute as an Everett Fellow
Application Deadline - May 2nd
Imagine late-night singing and philosophical discussions under the stars; engrossing Jewish learning; opportunities to participate in a variety of services, arts experiences, Shabbat celebrations, and outdoor activities; meeting a group of dynamic, thoughtful, energetic Jewish young adults as well as community members of all ages at a weeklong institute. Sounds fantastic, right? The NHC (National Havurah Committee) Summer Institute is now accepting applications for its Everett Fellows Program! Fellows participate in the full Summer Institute programming and in four workshops designed specifically for them. As a Fellow, you receive a scholarship for tuition, room, and board, and are expected to pay only for registration and dues ($120) for the full week (August 6-12). To apply for an Everett Fellowship, you must be 22 through 32 years of age, interested in exploring Havurah Judaism, and willing to participate fully in the Summer Institute. Preference is given to first time Institute attendees. The application can be found here: http://havurah.org/institute2012/financial-assistance/everett-fellowships. — it’s just four questions.
