merging note on + off back to type=NOTE

Hi,

I have built a phrase using seperate note on and offs so it looks like

'+a,-at96' is equivalent (in terms of MIDI output) to 'a'

what is the most efficient way to go from a (seperate) to b (merged as
a note), so that the phrase displays nice in a phrase window?
