India Stocks Review: End nearly 1% down on fall in overseas mkts

Key share indices ended nearly 1% down today, for the second
straight day, amid volatility on weakness in overseas markets.
Traders also avoided taking positions on caution ahead of the
outcome of Securities and Exchange Board of India's board meeting
later today. SEBI Chairman C.B. Bhave will address the media at
5:30PM.
Sensex ended at 15093.12, down 119.01 points or 0.8% from Tuesday.
Intra-day, it moved between 15013.06 and 15272.56.
Nifty closed at 4529.05, down 23.20 points or 0.5%. Intra-day, it
moved between 4497.25 and 4572.65.
Turnover on BSE and NSE combined was 175 bln rupees, compared with
198 bln rupees Tuesday.
CNX Mid-cap index ended 0.3% down, and S&P CNX 500 shed 0.5%.
Profit sales weighed down interest rate-sensitive stocks.
Shares of banks were worst hit on profit-booking amid worries over
pressure on their net interest margin.
HDFC Bank shed over 3%, while ICICI Bank, down 4% at 711 rupees,
was worst hit among Nifty stocks.
Maruti Suzuki India fell over 1%, while DLF shed 3%.
Shares of Noida Toll Bridge surged 15.5%, while those of Dish TV,
KS Oils and UCO Bank advanced around 10% each on news of being
included in the futures and options segment of NSE from Aug 21.
Shares of Puravankara Projects rose 2% after it forayed into lost-
cost housing by up setting a subsidiary for this purpose.
Short covering lifted Cairn India shares nearly 2%, while
defensive buying gave a boost to pharmaceutical shares like Cipla, up
3%, and Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, up 0.4%.
Steel shares rose on value buying, while Sterlite Industries
surged 3% to 613 rupees because of a 0.84% rise in the three-month
copper contract on London Metal Exchange today, and on positive
sentiment after it received Supreme Court's approval for mining
bauxite in Orissa.
The stock was top Nifty gainer.
