Left unlikely to budge on US nuke deal at meet with UPA today
Wednesday, Jun 25
NEW DELHI - The Left parties will reject any "mid-path" proposal
mooted by the government to resolve differences over the Indo-U.S.
nuclear deal, a Left representative of the United Progressive Alliance-
Left Front panel on the issue told NewsWire18 today.
The committee--set up to resolve differences over India's
agreement on civilian nuclear cooperation with the U.S.--comprising
members of the Congress-led UPA and the Left parties are slated to
meet later today,
There has been no shift in the Left Front's stance on the nuclear
deal, and the four parties will "not relent" on the matter at today's
meeting, Forward Bloc representative in the committee, Debabrata
Biswas, said.
"There has been no change in our position on the India-U.S. nuke
deal issue, nor are any of the government's mid-path proposals
acceptable to us," Biswas said.
The Left parties, which support the ruling coalition from outside,
are
opposed to the agreement as they feel it may compromise upon the
country's strategic affairs.
