Govt mulling cess, duty rejig, fuel price hike to bail out oil cos

- The government is considering imposing a surcharge on income
tax as part of a package to bail out oil marketing companies, a senior
oil ministry official said today.
"A proposal of levying a cess has been discussed along with bonds,
duty rationalisation and price hike...the finance ministry needs some
revenue source to give something to the oil companies," S.
Sundareshan, additional secretary, petroleum and natural gas ministry,
said.
He was speaking to reporters after a meeting between Petroleum and
Natural Gas Minister Murli Deora and Finance Minister P. Chidambaram.
