India Apr-May exports up 22% on year, imports rise 32%

India's merchandise exports in May grew 12.9% year-on-year to
$13.78 bln, the commerce and industry ministry said today.
Exports in May were 4.3% lower than $14.40 bln a month ago.
Imports during the month rose 27.1% from a year ago to $24.54 bln,
while the trade deficit rose to $10.77 bln from $7.10 bln a year ago.
India's exports during Apr-May, the first two months of 2008-09,
rose 21.7% to $28.18 bln, while imports grew 31.7% to $48.82 bln.
Trade deficit for the first two months of the current financial
year was at $20.64 bln compared with $13.91 bln a year ago.
India is targeting exports of $200 bln in 2008-09, up 29% from
$155.5 bln last year.
Oil imports in May were $8.47 bln, up 50.8% on year, while non-oil
imports rose 17.4% to $16.08 bln.
