Winter Education will meet every Wed in February this year.
This Wednesday February 8th features
Racing Upwind and Downwind by Dave Elsmo.
in the Chart room of the Memorial Union from 6:30 - 8:00 PM.
Dave was born and raised in Racine, Wisconsin and took to the water at
a young age. At three months old he was spending weekends with my
family sailing around the greater Midwest. At 12yrs old he competed
internationally in the Optimist Dinghy and crewed on C&C 36 with his
father. When he was13, he walked into the local Sail loft, a Quantum
sails loft at the time, and told them he would work for free if they
took him to Milwaukee and Chicago to race. From that point on he was
hooked. At age 15 he was the youngest Level 1 US Sailing instructor in
the nation all while competing in the big boat offshore circuits; for
a few years he even ran his own Star campaign at the local club. Aside
from all that he didn’t really taste one design racing until he
started his undergraduate degree at the University of Minnesota. For
four years he competed nationally, receiving numerous All-Conference
Skipper and Crew Awards while building the team to its highest
participation and results to date. While in Minnesota he worked for
the Wayzata Community Sailing Center coaching their Optimist Racing
team, three High School teams and two college teams all to varying
levels of national competition. Here at Hoofer’s, he is the coach of
the Univeristy of Wisconsin team, the team has received many national
recognitions including making it to the National top ten rankings for
the ICSA.
Meet us in the Chart room at the Memorial Union from 6:30 PM to 8 PM.
followed by visiting with your sailing friends. Great way to spend the
off-season.
West Marine is providing Door Prizes this year at every session. Last
weeks winner of the sailing gloves was Peter Botham.
