Subject: KCSWM new previews of Sidious and Luke
I'm missing out on a great game. But here are some previews not on
the Wizards site
I am disappointed in the Darth Sidious. Once again, the dark side characters pale in ability to stand against the light side. The new Grand Master Luke probably could take on three siths the like of Sidious.
Sidious abilities counteract against each other. He has MOTF2, but has no special abilities that he can use twice. He has pawn of the dark side, which HSADroids and TTDroids would be ideal to pawn, but droids do not benefit from his swap CE. Finally, his swap is greatly limited by the lack of booming voice.
The only thing that might work well would be to pawn the new Sith Lord (also from this set), to move 6, use force lightning, and then FL again on his own turn. But then he would be stripped of force points and would be down 10 HP.

I used to really only like playing Vader and a bunch of
Stormtroopers... It just seemed right. Do Stormtroopers ever see
play anymore? Some of the newer mook pieces seem to have much more
for the same or similar cost...
And did the Sandpeople ever get a commander?

stormtroopers still receive love in tier 2 or tier 3 play, but not in tier 1 with exception of thrawn swap squads.

Yeah, I think this is why I just couldn't get into the Star Wars tournaments.
I want to play "Star Wars", with squads of imperial troops in white armor and led by Vader or an officer or two vs those rebellious...ummm...rebels. And Luke should be about the coolest thing in that rebel group (not frickin' Han or R2-D2).
I've just never been interested in playing a game of Powerful Piece A + Utility Piece B + (more of the same) = a tournament team.
Boba Fett for all of his 10 minutes of screen time was really cool...just not as cool as WotC or the fans seem to think in every piece they put out for him.
I still love my prepainted pieces and I even dust them off once in a while when I can find a player that wants to play a themed game, but that's about it. I'm still trying to find someone to try out the West End Game Star Wars Miniatures Game with me using my WotC Star Wars pieces. That is an actual Star Wars squad based game (similar to something like Warhammer 40k). I'm not sure how great the rules are (although I do know they won awards for best miniatures game rules in 1991, I think), but I know I'd get the kind of game that I'm looking for.
As with all of my hobbies right now...someday...someday...
I'm right there with you on more Tusken Raiders, Chris B. It's probably a throwback to my Decipher Star Wars CCG Tusken Raider deck, but they just haven't done enough variety for my taste. I mean really, who do the Tusken Raiders hang out with? I need to be able to make a cool team with just Tusken Raiders.
Oh well, just another theme player's gripes. =)
I'm still going to do my big Hoth Battle one of these days when I get the urge to write up a special scenario and rules for the event. I think it would be cool. I have 4 AT-AT's and a number of AT-ST's, 6 Hoth Maps, about a Legion's worth of Snow Troopers and Hoth Troopers, enough Hoth-Hero types like General Veers, Leia, Han and Luke on Taun Tauns, and enough artillary to take over every 2-D spot on the maps for a cool 3-D effect. It could be a full day, epic event. Maybe a good 4 player game...2 Imperial Commanders and 2 Rebel Commanders...hmmm...ideas, ideas...
=)
Well, everyone enjoy whatever games you like. I just know that the tournament scene isn't for me. I've been there, won that, but never left with a warm-fuzzy-feeling. It wasn't the players either, just the way you had to play in a tournament to win a tournament.

I'm more of an "Original Trilogy" kinda guy, but Clone Wars could be fun. I have a TON of the Huge, Seperatist warmachines to make for a cool, big-scale battle.
Armies of battle droids vs. clones could be really neat.
Sounds like fun.
I'd be interested in hearing about more of these games and formats from all of you players.

We have tried to run thematic tournaments that were friendly to this idea. If those tournaments were unsatisfactory in some way or if you otherwise have suggestions that would excite you to come to the thematic tournaments, let me know and we will consider it.
For June, we are doing standard 150 in preparation of upcoming regionals.

There will be a DCI sanctioned tournament on Thursday June 4th, 2009 at 31st Century in Olathe. 31st Century is in the SW corner of the intersection of 151st Street and Murlen. Phone # is (913)397-7706.
This tournament will follow all normal rules for standard tournaments. Each player will construct a 150 point squad consistent with the faction rules.
We will begin Setup and Registration at 5:45 and the first round at 6:00. Rounds will last 60 minutes. We will play Gambit rules.
Maps will be determined according to the DCI-rules. This means each player must bring their own DCI-legal map, and must use this map in each round. If a player does not bring a map, and wins map choice, he must choose his opponents map.
The purpose of this tournament is to prepare for the SW Miniatures regionals held in Springfield, MO and Lincoln, NE. So, bring your most competitive squad for this tournament. If you are not interested in the regionals, come anyway and give us your best shot!
Oh, I wasn't "complaining" about anyone's tournaments in particular. Just the general tournament style vs. theme play.
In most games that have picked up a tournament component it seems that theme play almost gets thought of as a second class play style. I've literally known players in Heroclix tournaments who knew nothing about superheroes or comicbooks. They simply mix the most min-maxed, tournament teams possible to compete for the win. I'm not saying that's "wrong" per se, but it just doesn't seem like the spirit of the game.
I feel the same with the Star Wars tournaments that I've been to. (Important Note: I've never been to Christopher Freeman's touranments. This is NOT a judgement on his games.) Since when is Boba Fett (any it seems) + Medical Droid + Utility Piece B + Ewok (if you have space) a "Star Wars" team?
I'm not saying that What If's aren't fun and I'm not saying that I haven't done this once or twice when I wanted to see some ability used to maximum effect, but this seems to be the NORMAL way of building tournament teams from what I've experienced.
Again, I'm not saying that any tournament organizer is wrong for the games that they run (I'm glad someone IS going to that trouble) and I'm not faulting players for building to the competition. I just know from many games of frustration that the tournament scene generally isn't for me.
Building a "fun" or "theme" team shouldn't be looked down upon in any format that I'm going to play in.
Just my opinions.
Enjoy whatever games you like and whatever games you can find!
=)

I'm still trying to find someone to try out the West End Game Star Wars Miniatures Game with me using my WotC Star Wars pieces. That is an actual Star Wars squad based game (similar to something like Warhammer 40k). I'm not sure how great the rules are (although I do know they won awards for best miniatures game rules in 1991, I think), but I know I'd get the kind of game that I'm looking for.

Chris Freeman runs excellent tournies and I've played a few, win none
lose most.
I know that Kevin and I have done some theme teams (1-2 majors and the
rest are logical mooks like Vader and Stormies vs. Luke/Han/Leia and
Rebel Troopers, etc).
There is definitely a style of team making tourney vs. theme.
I do get a bit tired of the "I just need to roll a 2 or higher to
score major damage" characters. But maybe that is because I don't
have any of those characters...
I actually liked the "Unleashed" characters with all the pushing.

I know what you mean. I usually try to run squad that make sense somewhat. The difficulty is that the Fringe can go with any other faction.
You probably wouldn't be surprised to know that half the squads I faced at Gencon ran a Solo/Fett combo. Frustrated, on the last day, I decided to join them :)
I liked the idea that someone tossed about (perhaps on this group??) that certain characters should have a negative affinity special ability. Whoever came up with the idea had a much better name for it. Anyway, the point was so that the special ability would list characters that the current character could not be ran with. For instance, Solo and Fett. But we will never see it from wizos.

It could be a full day, epic event. Maybe a good 4 player game...2 Imperial Commanders and 2 Rebel Commanders...hmmm...ideas, ideas...

I suppose that is just the nature of the openness of the game. I
think a Solo Fett combo is dumb from a Star Wars standpoint, but
probably made a great meta-game combo. I know I've fallen victim to
Boba's disintegrate more than should be possible. (So long Mace...)
Fringe do put a monkey wrench in the game. I know that I used to make
fun teams to play with my friends and the ubberest combo I could think
of for winning the free booster box.
I do miss the game and hope to get back into it again someday.
As long as you are having fun, I think everything is okay. And each
has it's place.
I'll holler when I visit KC to see if anyone wants to face the wrath
of Vader (Boba Solo need not apply).

It is the clone wars starter, but it has the piece known as GOWK (General ObiWan Kenobi). He is hard to beat.

There will be a DCI sanctioned tournament on Tuesday June 16th, 2009 at 31st Century in Olathe.
