Post Description |
The Department consists of the University Archives, Africana, Special Books Collection. Each section provides a specialised service and needs specialised expertise.
- Planning, developing and expanding the existing Special Books Collections which include the Rare Books, Document Collections, University Archives into an excellent Specialist Collection, focusing on the conservation and making available of material for research and teaching. - Planning, organizing, co-ordinating, supervising and executing all functions performed in all the divisions. - Managing and promoting the optimal use of available information resources and services in the Special Collections. - Providing a specialist information service for researchers. - Managing the departmental budget. - Managing and developing staff in the Department. - Developing and managing databases (manuscripts, artifacts and archives), inventories, and other search aids. - Developing and managing digitization projects. - Marketing and communicating information regarding collections and archives to researchers and users. |

Requirements |
- B.Bibl. or equivalent degree, or Post Diploma in Archival Studies. - A minimum of 5 years’ experience in managing Special Collections and/or Archives. - A minimum of 3 years’ recent experience in middle management in a tertiary or special library working with special collections and archives. - Proven advanced knowledge of collection development, management and maintenance of special and archival collections. - Proven knowledge of the management of department budget. - Proven advanced knowledge of the conversation and making available of rare books and document collections in an archive. - Proven project management skills. - Proven advanced information abilities, e.g. the use and evaluation of information resources in various formats, with emphasis on electronic information sources, computerised library catalogues, the Internet, email, and Windows-based word-processing and spreadsheet packages. - Proven experience in digitization of special collections. - A dynamic, experienced, user-focused orientation and the ability to work effectively with staff members, faculty, researchers, students and external clients. - Management and interpersonal skills. - Training and presentation skills. - Excellent oral and written communication skills. - Knowledge of sub-Saharan African history and related disciplines. - Proficiency in Afrikaans and English, and either isiZulu, seSotho sa Lebowa and/or a European language. |
