Introduction to PM - Who should attend?
You may have a good deal of experience in working on projects, but recognise that your hands-on approach now needs to be supported by a course which will quickly and effectively give you a firm grounding in the principles of project management.
Introduction to PM - Aim:
To provide an introduction to the essentials of Project Management as stipulated by the well-proven and widely recognised Project Management Body of Knowledge (2009 edition) from the Project Management Institute, which is an ANSI standard (ANSI/PMI 99-001-2004). It also conforms to the Services SETA unit standard (NLRD 120372), viz. Explain Fundamentals of Project Management, which is set at an NQF Level 4.
Introduction to PM - Contents:
- So what is a project? An introduction to project management
- The project life cycle: what it is and why it matters
- Key measures of project success: scope, time, cost management
- The other half dozen: six essential knowledge areas to improve project performance
- Beyond the basics: how to improve organisational performance through projects
Introduction to PM - Outcomes:
At the end of the workshop, the learner will:
- Understand the role and importance of the project life cycle
- Identify where and how to use key knowledge areas
- Know how to improve project success
- Understand how to improve personal, team and organisational performance in projects.

Advanced PM - Who should attend?
Learners who have completed Introduction to PM and now want an advanced course, Managers, Project Managers; Project Sponsors; Project Owners; Business managers
Advanced PM - Aim:
This workshop gives delegates the opportunity to learn about how to make effective use of Project Management (PM) to enhance organisational performance. Delegates will be familiar with the basic concepts but will be looking for ways to make the use of PM tools and techniques more successful in their organisations.

- Program and Portfolio Management
- PM maturity assessment
- Developing your business case
- Assessing PM skills
- Assessing project complexity
- Putting it all together: advanced project management case study
Advanced PM - Outcomes:
At the end of the workshop, the learner will:
- Understand how to launch a project support office
- Understand the difference between project, program and portfolio management
- Understand how to conduct a maturity assessment of a project
- Understand how to assess the complexity of a project
- Understand how to assess the project skills of a team.

- Uses a combination of interactive and case study delivery methods to accelerate and reinforce delegate learning opportunities
- Makes use of numerous real-world examples through multimedia techniques

About the facilitator:
Dr Peter K J Tobin has been a certified Project Management Practitioner (PMP) since 1998. His PMP R status has been recertified to 2011. Dr Peter Tobin combines his extensive experience in managing and delivering projects with his skills in developing and delivering Project Management education at all levels. He was been a Senior Lecturer in Project Management (PM) at a leading SA business school from 1999-2011 and has delivered his courses widely across South Africa as well as in Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Nigeria and Zimbabwe. Hundreds of delegates in a wide variety of organisations (business, governmental and non-governmental) have benefited from his experiences, insights and skills.
Dr Tobin is a graduate of four Universities. He gained his first degree at the University of York (England), following this with the Diploma in Marketing from the world-renowned Institute of Marketing (England). He later completed a Post-Graduate Diploma in Management at the University of East London (England). He also holds the prestigious MBA awarded by Henley Management College and Brunel University (England), graduating top of his class. He was awarded his Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of Pretoria.
Dr Tobin's experience in the PM field has been accumulated over a number of years across two continents. In England and Europe he gained extensive experience in a variety of industries and application areas. His personal development included management programmes with the British Army (he is a graduate of the Military Academy, Sandhurst), Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) and International Business Machines (IBM). In South Africa, he spent fifteen years in senior professional and management positions, gaining valuable experience on a number of projects in a wide variety of application areas.
Whilst with IBM (SA) Dr Tobin successfully qualified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) with the US-based Project Management Institute in 1998. He has maintained his PMP status, having already recertified to 2011. He has been a member of the South African branch of the PMI (PMSA) since 1997 and is currently one of only some sixty Professional Grade members in South Africa among the PMSA's membership of over 1300. In 2004, he became one of a small number of South African PMP R holders to complete the challenging Foundation and Practitioner Examinations of the UK-based Prince2 methodology. Dr Tobin is also one of the very few people in South Africa to hold concurrently Professional Grade membership of the Computer Society of South Africa. He has also acted as session chair and conference paper reviewer at local PMSA conferences.
In addition to managing projects and developing and delivering PM education, Dr Tobin has consulted to a number of organisations on their effective implementation of the PM approach. He has also worked extensively with a South African government agency in evaluating project proposals and implementation for multi-million rand projects over the past nine years.
Dr Tobin has published over twenty academic conference papers and journal articles, has spoken at numerous local and international conferences and has facilitated in excess of one hundred courses in a number of fields in the past fifteen years.
