A decade of knowledge, archives and records management as reflected in SA journals and magazines

Dr Adriaan Swanepoel, Tshwane University of Technology

Port Elizabeth

19 May 2010

This paper reports on the method (content analysis) and findings of a research project to trace the development and trends in knowledge, archives and records management (KARM) as reflected in South African journals and magazines in the decade 1999–2008.

The study aimed to get answers to the following questions:

a) Which subjects related to KARM were covered by South African journals and magazines from year to year?

b) From which subject discipline viewpoints were articles written?

Outcome:

The findings and conclusions of the study can assist knowledge, archives and records managers to recognise and understand changes in their fields and to react to those changes.

Dr Swanepoel is the Head of the Library on the Pretoria Campus of the Tshwane University of Technology. His research outputs include 22 journal articles (16 as single author and 6 as co-author), 8 papers at international conferences and 7 papers at local conferences and symposia. He is also co-editor of a book that was published in June 2009. He serves on the editorial board of an accredited library journal. Dr Swanepoel obtained a doctorate degree in library science from the University of Pretoria.
