I've always wondered why Page Titles are links to themselves. Every
site I design or help setup with K2, the first thing I do is remove
all "linking" from the page title.

So my questions are,
Why are page titles links to themselves?
Is there a shortcode way of making them non-links?
Is there a reason beyond what I can see that page titles are links?

The title is linked with its permalink in order to support the hAtom
microformat which adds semantic meaning to the markup and also has an
SEO benefit. It also aids usability, since if the page is split into
multiple sections (i.e. with the <!--more--> tag), the link should
always lead to page 1.

Easiest way to override it is with a Child Theme: http://code.google.com/p/kaytwo/wiki/K2ChildThemes

That is for SEO Search engine Optimization. Ping Backs and and such.
Best to leave them alone if you like page ranking. ;c)

Pingbacks are handled by something in the <head> which is in turn rendered by wp_head()
