Our middle school wants to paint a mural on the cafeteria wall that
captures the feeling of our school.

Has anyone out there done a large scale mural with a group of students?
Any advice, suggestions? Looking to make this an enjoyable, well-planned
and executed project for all involoved.

If you are a muralist in Western Pennsylvania and you are interested in
offering help, please e-mail me. We can't pay much, but would love the
help and guidance.

E-mail gold...@chapel.fcasd.edu

Thanks!

sheet of high-grade luan plywood, 4x8 feet, rather than directly on the
wall. This can be moved if the wall needs to be painted or
repaired at a later date. They painted a black background using
two coats of acrylic latex satin enamel, which they sanded
lightly with very fine sand paper after it dried.
All of the students working on the mural submitted
preliminary drawings, so that even those students who do not
draw well had a chance for their ideas to be considered. These
ideas were then put together in a final sketch by a student
with strong drawing skills, on a gridded sheet of paper the
same proportions as the panel. The students had to do the math
to determine the dimensions. Rather than drawing the whole grid
on the panel, they put dots on the panel to show where the
corners of the squares were. They sketched in the drawing, a
collage of images symbolic ofart, drama, music, and dance, with
white colored pencil, and are now painting it with acrylic
paint. When it is finished, we plan to install it in the
hallway in the fine arts wing of our school. So far, it looks
great!
