I am working on a school report about the French artists of the fine
arts. Who so you feel contributed most to the French arts? I would
appreciate hearing from you. Just tell me what artist and why you
picked him or her. Thank You Very Much!!!

Off the top of my head I would say Cezanne mainly because of
his incredible control of composition.

Henri Matisse...I personally feel that his use of geometric and
organic shapes in his "collage paintings" are really dynamic. Then to
top it off the contrasting colors make the work even more dynamic.
Overall, in reference to his collage work, his ability to capture the
essence of his subject through simple yet rhythmic images is just very
satisfying. I also believe that this simplification had an extreme
influence on modern and abstract art!

Claude Monet 1840-1926 was one of the greatest French artists. He
had a lot of Impressionist friends who were marvelous and they
synergized well. Monet's idea was to paint light as it was
reflected by flowers, water, etc at different times of the day
and year. His study of color and light is somewhat scientific.
His work was not well accepted early on, but he continued
nevertheless. He must have been a strong personality. See the
series The Artists by Themselves: Claude Monet. It's a book that
shows some of his work and excerpts from his letters. Monet is
one of my favorites! Have fun with your project! Mrs.
