Hi Andrea,

Thanks for all the great links. I looked through your web site. It is
great. The kids have done some fantastic work.

I teach K-8 art to over 400 kids per week. I would love to have smaller
classes. I have a degree in Elementary Ed. My principal needed someone
who liked to dabble with art to teach it to the kids. I teach at a
small Catholic school in Louisiana. I only teach Wed.-Fri., so it was a
great part time job for me!

I must say most times I feel very inadequate. The older kids aren't
ever happy with the things I plan for them to do. They would love to
get messy every time they visit...I don't even have a sink or 5 minutes
between classes to get prepared!

I try to find age appropriate activities for each group. I have spent a
fortune on books in the 3 years I have been at this. There is a lot I
would like for them to do but I don't have the budget! It is
challenging!

Welcome to the list!

:-)

Hi Helen,

I really thought our kids would like the drawing lessons but found out quickly
they don't. I did put the 6th grade through a lesson in perspective & they
were amazed at the results. I plan on using that knowledge to further this
year.

I do a lot of crayon resist type stuff with the older kids. Next week I will
let them work on their initials, done in huge block letters, using line
designs with crayon & bright water colors for resist. It comes out really
nice! We mount them on black paper for display.

7th grade does a project using white glue on black paper with oil pastels.
8th grade uses black glue on white poster board with water colors. They get
two pieces of poster board & must cover one with abstract designs. On the
other piece, they make at least 6 single shapes that will be water colored &
cut out. We use 3 d-os to mount the shapes on top of the abstract. The black
glue serves as a sort of reservoir for the water colors. Some kids use bright
colors & some use pastel. This is a favorite with the parents & the
principal!!!

I would love to talk to you some more! Please feel free to e-mail me!

:-)

Hi. I'm Helen and I have taught art to middle school aged children in
Catholic schools for many years. Like you, I do not have a degree in art.
I have found that the older students like drawing lessons and working with
perspecitive.
