Newish to K-9 mail (v4.200), which I'd tried a year or so ago on a different phone. As I recall, I abandoned it partly because I was getting weird error messages and partly because my mail was not syncing properly and partly because I didn't really understand about the classes. This time I did figger out about the classes tho, which pretty much helped me understand the syncing issue :) but I'm still seeing the weird errors at least some of the time.

I'm testing it with 5 gmail accounts, 2 comcast.net accounts and 1 own-host account. All are getting inbounds, and I can send, so it could be worse, I guess, but I've occasionally seen these two errors: libcore.io.errnoException and java.net.SocketTimeoutExcep under the Inbox on at least 2 of my gmail accounts. It does go away, tho, but would be good to know what causes them.

The main question I have at the moment is that a couple of my gmail accounts have some messages in the Inbox, and after I read them, I set them back to unread. The expectation was that (like the GMail app) when I later went to my PC email (Eudora) they would then be retrieved there via that same account, and because that account in Eudora does remove them from the server, the K9 app would no longer see them, at least upon a refresh/resync. This is not happening, they are NOT coming into the PC app at all, and are still in K9, so I'm guessing that the messages must have been removed/set to read on the server upon receipt on the phone, so that my email program simply isn't seeing them anymore. I have the accounts set to poll only 1st class folders, with the in and outboxes set as 1st class and display and sync both set to 1st class only. Is this normal behavior or something I've got set wrong?

TIA

Sorry, forgot to add that all of the accounts are POP, not IMAP, if
that makes a difference.

Permit me to repeat the mantra: IMAP works *much* better than POP when
multiple clients look at the same mailboxes.

Always.

If you can switch, you should.

Yes, I was a big fan of Eudora, and I miss it, but it's waaay out of
date now.

In any case, be sure to tell K-9 not to remove mail from the inbox, like
you have with Eudora; I don't use POP anymore (see above), but I'm sure
it's in the settings somewhere.

Hi Dennis Rockwell! I'm answering your msg dated 09:20 AM 5/22/2013:

I don't "normally" view them on multiple clients, this was just a
test, and if it works, I'll stop checking them on one of the
machines. Under my "normal" setup, it ain't broke, so I'm not going
to fix it :)

Of course it is, but it still works splendidly, even on my brand new
win7 pro x64 laptop :) And it's not susceptible to the myriad badboys
out there that target Outlook, for one. Oh and because Qualcomm
abandoned it long ago, it's now free. What's not to like? I haven't
found anything else that is better, frankly, at least for ME.

If it is, I'm not seeing it, Dennis. Under Fetching Mail, I
don't have "sync server deletions" set but I do have "delete from
server" when I delete on the device. But I don't see anything else,
for example in the incoming server config, that would remove emails
from the server before/as they were read. Plus I set up ALL of the
folders in ALL of the accounts as All/1st Class. Well, not including
sync for stuff like the sent and drafts folders.

So I sent another test message to all of them after making them all
look the same. This time, tho, it was a more interesting result. Of
the 8 messages, the 4 non-gmail ones DID come in later via Eudora on
the PC, but the gmail ones did NOT. I went poking around on the
online gmail, and sure enough, the messages WERE there, but even tho
I had not opened them either in K9 or Eudora. Gmail had marked them
as Read as soon as they were delivered, presumably, because they were
not in the Inbox, but rather under All Mail. So clearly this must be
a gmail thing, not K9. Fascinating :) I'm well aware that gmail does
have other oddities along this line, but this particular one
surprised me. I can live with it tho, now that I understand what is happening.

So the message here is that I just need to be careful which accounts
I want on which device, at least as far as being able to retrieve
them on the OTHER device later on, should I want to.

Thanks

elaine

PS After I wrote this I installed the latest beta so stuff may be
different now, dunno yet. I'll betcha the gmail accounts still work the same :)
