Okay, i just sat down and cleared off tons of email. now from 500 i probably have 50/100.
I tried to run a compact. However, the memory usage on the account doesnt seem to come down. It was 9.5MB when I started and now 10.1MB.
It just says compacting account, but it doesnt seem to actually do it.

Please see my comment (Comment 3) in Issue 1474 for a probable explanation.

Actually I have a Nexus one, and I am using Apps2SD, so I really doubt I'm running out of space. I have 151MB in internal space free.  Let alone the gig odd on the sdcard (ext) and couple of gigs on fat32.

I'm really guessing its something else. For now, I just removed the account and re-added, but Im sure this bug does exist. I tried fresh starts of the app and everything and nothing seemed to help.

I'm having the same problem -- compact doesn't :P

My log says

Failure 10 (disk I/O error) on 0x89590 when executing "VACUUM'
(10449) Failed to compact account MyOtherAccount
(10449) android.database.sqlite.SQLiteDiskIOExceptionL disk I.O error:

This is with the new build, 2.706. I'm running cyan's 5.0.6 on Nexus
One and I have the database on my ext3 partition on my class 6 SD
card. For the record, I was getting the same error on previous builds
and when the database was on internal storage.

Would "clear" work, instead?

"Clear all data" may work better, or may suffer the same problem. In
K-9 Mail version 2.707 there will be a new "Recreate account" action
which will totally wipe out all account data, but leave the settings
intact. It should work when all else fails, and is noted in the menu
as "Last Resort!"

Clear all data worked -- brought my database down from about 11M to
less than 1M (yes, the account sees a lot of activity and has a lot of
messages in the inbox). I'd really like to get to the bottom of the
problem that SQLite is running into. I suppose you'd like to know
that, too, eh? :)
