Hi everyone,

Looking for examples of other aviation-specific makerspaces ... know of any?

Thank you!

Keith -  You might check out http://www.buildaplane.org/.   looks like they have a list of about 20 projects.

This is something I'm looking forward to doing at www.urbanmontessori.org.   I've built 2 and can't wait to show a few others how to do it.  If you want suggestions on airplanes, quick advice -  go with all metal and start with pop rivets.  vans aircraft, an employee owned company in Oregon, sells more kits than the next five competitors all put together. More importantly, the airplanes tend to hold value and sell. Athenian is building an RV 12.  the RV-12 is an LSA, which means limitations on speed, weight etc., but it also means it's much easier to build than the rest of their kits (which require real riveting).   They estimate 1000 hours of build time for an average builder on the RV-12.   Be wary of someone who wants to give you a kit-it might be cheaper, but take longer to find missing pieces and get oriented than to start from scratch.

An airplane project is what set me off on this whole adventure is making and doing -  https://medium.com/@parkerthomas/farewell-to-a-teacher-5e7c3b96cfa#.9ss5x2r62

 hope that helps.

Hi Kevin,

Raisbeck Aviation High School (an aviation-themed public high school) recently opened out here in the Seattle area.

They have several project labs specifically designed to support project-based programs such as building robots, rockets, and airplanes. You can see a photo gallery here.

Aviation High School is a charter school in Grand Rapids - imagine a military inspired makerspace. They don't call it a makerspace, but their machine shop, design lab, and drone program are amazing. The website doesn't do it justice. I got a tour a while back and the things they are doing are quite fantastic. http://www.westmichiganaviation.org

I have a few photos I could share privately if you want - I may or may not have had permission to take them :-)
