This has been going around social media. This equipment would fit right into many a lab/makerspace.

This is mind blowing and inspiring. I wonder what the quality of the 3d filament would be. We waste so much! There are a couple of companies that do this to make their products (green toys, renew toothbrushes) but it would be great to be a regular thing in peoples houses, food coops, farmers markets, churches or the like.

I agree, this is super inspiring!  My only hesitation would be the fumes you would generate from melting down all that plastic...

Only improvement would be to have a 3D printer with the shredder/extruder built-in and a big REJECT button to deal with spoiled prints.

When I brought this up to our school, our MS Dean's son is doing something similar. She said that the local supermarket sets aside a recycling bin for him once a week. I haven't spoken to him yet, but plan to see his setup.

Yes - this was an Intel Science Fair finalist. He said it cost him $100 in parts. He swore it worked! :-)

There's a Toronto based company called ReDetec that is selling an integrated desktop plastic shredder and filament producer called the Protocycler

I'm in the process of getting one. When I do I will let people know how it goes. Hopefully it will make our failures that much more affordable!

I just met with the folks at Maker Bay (www.makerbay.org) here in Hong Kong and they are building the Precious Plastic machines. A few road blocks in sourcing materials and creating parts, but they are confident that they will get a few machines made to test. I hope to share as I learn more about their process in building their machines.

Hi Brian,

Just wondering if you ended up seeing the machines in action? We're looking at trying a summer project to build one oversees with a global partner school.

Thanks,
Maggie

Unfortunately, I'd have to recommend against this. 3D printers outsource a lot of their complexity to the purity of their filament, so you really need to know what you're getting in the plastic to have some hope of it working. More importantly though as some others have noted, you really don't want to melting who-knows-what. It's probably more efficient overall to be sure you put your plastic in your community's recycling system since they have economy of scale...

Filabot accepts 3d print waste. They will recycle it. It is so lightweight that it wouldn't cost that much to ship it.  They say, just please be sure you separate PLA from ABS and that it is clearly labeled if there is more than one type.

It can be sent to
