Jeff, Alan, Jameson and Keno at least seem to be ok. I hope everyone else is too.

Thanks for your concern; fortunately it was a very localized event. I was a spectator close to the finish line and had just wandered off when it happened. I put some public posts on Facebook if anyone is interested in that sort of thing.

This is such a tragedy and it is so scary that you were actually there. Glad to know that you are ok.

What the fuck is going on in boston? I read that the police 'urged
people to stay at home', surely that is way overkill for a few events
that killed maybe ten in a city of ~800k. The chances of getting hurt
are fairly small. Frankly, you should do the opposite to make the point
that you will not change your lifestyle due to terrorism.(for instance
go to your neighbours and walk around with signs a bit, hope the media
sees it..)

Frankly, you should keep this nonsense to yourself.

I sincerely hope that nobody in the Boston area is going to be foolish enough to be out and about with the entire city on lockdown and a full-scale manhunt in progress.

These are difficult times and I am really glad that everyone is safe. Let's try to keep the discussion on this mailing list related to julia.

If you mean i got the death toll wrong, well serious injury sucks too.
I ballpark it at 10/800k in a few events. This is not the kind of risk
where you tell people to stay at home and be afraid of strangers, it is
more damaging to lives and communities than the terrorists would be.

This has nothing to do with being afraid of strangers. It is simply
about avoiding interference with *extensive* and highly active police
operations currently in the Boston area. We don't mind staying inside
to give official forces space to do their job. In fact I believe the
official lockdown is already over.

Obviously most of us are not there and can't really make judgement calls about how dangerous the situation is. Calculating odds of being killed based on population is obviously flawed because other variables like proximity to bombs and people trying to use them are far more relevant.

I think the important thing is not be someone who got in a car instead of a plane after 911. Staying home hardly falls into that category.
