Basically if you think about the government subsidy model that Nichols
and Machesney are promoting in their new book, and move it completely to
the private sector --- that's Kachingle. Kachingle subscribers pay
$5/month through a credit card (paypal) and can then take that $5 and
distribute it among the web sites that they read that are using
Kachingle. So, for example, if you have a Kachingle subscription you
can go to our web site and click on the Kachingle medallion on the site.
Part of your monthly $5 will then go to us through Paypal monthly. This
morning there were only about 73 sites set up for Kachingle, but it
seems to be growing quickly (it only went publicly live yesterday).
Speaking of monetization, has anyone tried syndicating their blog? I've had mine syndicated through Newstex (htp://www.newstex.com) for quite awhile. They create feeds of blogs that are then sold to B2Bs. And, since I worked for Newstex for a bit, I know they're *very* interested in political and other newsblogs. There's no charge to join Newstex, and they don't mess with your readership.
They also take tweets and video.
If you're interested, you can check out the Newstex site or let me know and I can give you the name of someone over there who can help you get started.
Best,
Tish

Unfortunately though, we're still really in the position where I am
trying to pay for what it costs me just to keep the site online (it's
-um - probaably more expensive for me than most -- I do my own hosting
as part of my hosting business). By the way -- if any of you are
looking for web hosting, domain names, Drupal consulting, etc. -- I'm
pretty broke at the moment. :-)
Steve - if you believe this sort of model is going to work, why not just ask for subscribers to your website - $5 a month certainly isn't outlandish - and if 100 people signed up, that would at least bring you the entire $500? Or did you already try that? - TR
