Need Your Feedback: Ideas for 6 Week Course on News Innovation

Hi all,
The Media Consortium is joining with Mozilla (the geniuses behind the browser Firefox and champion of the open web) and Hacks/Hackers (a great group bringing together journalists and technologists) to organize and host a six week course to explore and learn about areas of news innovation. Each week the course will focus on a different topic, and each week the participants will be joined by a different subject-matter expert from the field of news innovation.

But as the program develops we we need feedback from both journalists and programmers on the questions:

• What topics should be covered?
• Would you be interested in helping to teach a topic?

While it may not seem like innovation to some because it is more about integration than unique development, I think a session on innovating with drupal, with folks connected to drupal.org and to some case studies, would be useful.

Business/Marketing planning: I'm going to continue to beat this drum/dead horse. Innovators need to have a clear idea what market they're planning to serve, what its needs are, and what revenue sources are suitable for that market. They also need to know how to model their cost structure. I'd be interested in contributing to this.

Content Management Systems/Frameworks: Better to cover the criteria for choosing among content management systems from a development perspective, rather than leaving participants with an introduction to Drupal, which is not the only choice available to them and may be a poor choice for the unprepared.

I taught a class content management systems to journalism students at the university, and I think the whole concept is critical for journalists/new media publishers to understand.

So a short course in CMS and then a drive around the block in the new and user-friendly Drupal Gardens or the hosted Wordpress solutions sees like a good idea to me.

I took Joi Ito's digital journalism class, and I've posted about it at
MediaShift and have done research on alternatives, with links and
slides created during the class posted at my own site. Those links are
over at Hackshackers if you want to read more.

Great concept. The devil, or the genius, of course, is in the details.

Shout out here, though, to the structure of KDMC's news entrepreneur
boot camp, which mashed up online learning with a face to face
intensive week of learning.
To build strong networks, a F2F component is key, and KDMC did it
*after* building community online. That experience strengthened my
belief that classes like this need F2F components, and it's important
for long term sustainability to bring those classes to a local level
at some point.
