Brian and I have carefully reviewed the complete discussion thread on the Java 7 proposal discussion. We have also reviewed the draft specification. In doing so we realised that the spec had not actually mentioned any versions.

We have updated the spec with the following wording to deal with versions of Java SE, JTS and Annotations and propose the following:

----------------------------

Java SE The specification will work with Java SE. The API is defined in accordance with Java SE version 6. Implementations may choose to only work on a higher version of Java. There is no requirement for implementations to support Java 6.

Annotations The specification will define optional runtime cache annotations in accordance with JSR175. These annotations will require the presence of an annotation processor to work.

Transactions Optional support for transactions, both local and XA will be defined in accordance with. JTS 1.1. These will require the presence of a transaction manager to work.

---------------------------

Please vote on whether you accept this wording in the customary way.

Regards

I assume that this implies that the reference implementation could be java se 7 only, but the tck must be java se 6 compatible? (This doesn't matter for my vote, just curious if the RI might be se  7 only)

+1 to the first part of the prose.

and -1 for this minor choice of wording:

> These will require the presence of a transaction manager to work.

IMHO that sentence is unnecessary (on the verge of redundant).

Being only compatible with java 7 would make adoption in some places that much more difficult. I know some dark corners that are still on 1.4 and no, this is not a joke.
