Subject: Jubilee, Pilgrim, Vigilant, the 1893 America's Cup, and more...

Hi again -

We just added another ten new 1890s Johnston yacht photographs today
on http://www.jsjohnston.org :

  * Norota - the cutter built by B. F. Wood from the designs of William Gardner
  * Pilgrim - a defense candidate by a Boston syndicate for the 1893
America's Cup
  * Molly Bawn
  * Mary
  * Embla - a big steam yacht - probably the 135.6' steam yacht built
1893 in Nyack NY and owned during 1897-1900 by J. H. Hanan.
  * Jubilee - another Boston candidate for the defense of the 1893
America's Cup
  * Musme - the J & M built by Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. in 1896
  * Mai - the 30' fin sloop also built by Herreshoff in 1896.
  * Vigilant - the winner of the 1893 America's Cup against British
challenger Valkyrie II. Designed and built by Herreshoff  in 1893.

Leon writes us with some interesting questions about Jubilee and the
1893 Cup. Perhaps one of you can help. He writes:

   >I have taken an interest in researching the yacht Jubilee and
noticed that you have added a couple of photographs of her to your
web site: nrs. 286 and 287.
   >As the date for these photographs, you list 1893.
   >At the time of the 1893 America's Cup defense trials (September
7, 9 and 11, 1893), the Jubilee had a black hull with a white stripe
at the gunwale, as witnessed by
   > An image in the Rosenfeld collection (see:
http://www.nytstore.com/ProdDetail.aspx?prodId=2580)
   > Henry G. Peabody's images in the National Archives of Congress
   > A pen drawing by G.W. Wood ("Three unsuccessful candidates for
Cup-defence honors in 1893", opposite page 140 in Lawson's History of
the America Cup)
   > Buttersworth's oil painting of Vigilant and Jubilee in the 1893
trials does depict Jubilee with a white hull, but I'll go by the
photographs (
http://www.mariner.org/exhibitions/highlights/fineart_vigilant.php )
   >
   >Is it possible that photographs 286 and 287 were taken at a later date?
   >The Jubilee didn't fare too well in the early September trials,
and needed repairs to her rigging, so it is very well possible that
her owner decided to change her hull color as well to start a new chapter.

Enjoy!  Let us know if you can add any new information!

Chris
