'Hash' is undefined modal.js

Hi All,

I have a virtuemart website that is not displaying the browse category thumbnails in IE8.    A Windows Internet Explorer error comes up that says 'Hash' is undefined in the first line of /media/system/js/modal.js of my joomla installation.

Seems to work in all other browsers.  Any idea if this error is causing the image problem?  Any idea what that error means?
