Hi all,

Just so there is no confusion about code review or anything, I'm leaving Joomla development completely for the foreseeable future.  Best of luck with everything.

Cheers.

Louis, thanks so much for everything you've done! You've left quite the
legacy and it will be difficult for anyone to fill your shoes. You've set
a great example for the next person that will be in your role, as well as
for all the other contributors. You'll be missed!

Wish you all the best in your endeavors! Enjoy every moment! :)

Your impact on where joomla is today, and how it got here, is HUGE. Thanks for everything mate.

I sincerely hope this decision of yours isnt related to the LGPL suggestion. You convinced me then back in 2009 why is mattered, and I believe it still does.

News just in, imaginary stocks in Joomla! took a drastic dive on Thursday due to the unpredicted exit of lead developer, Louis Landry... the title of his resignation ("goodbye and thanks for all the fish") seems to alude to Louis feeling unappreciated... as per the dolphins in Douglas Adam's Hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy. Also a mysterious "ditto" comment from another lead developer, Andrew Eddie, has the whole community speculating. It can be hoped that Andrew was referring to the comment above lauding the work and achievements of Louis... Andrew's comment, "LOL! I dunno, maybe I should leave you guessing :)", has many concerned...

Recent events have lead to confusion about the direction of "The Joomla! Platform" and whether it will remain a part of the Joomla Project or break off on it's own as a CMS completely rebuilt from the ground up (as alluded to many times by Joomla Lead developer, Andrew Eddie). It should be noted that similar attempts in the past, namely with Johan Janssen and his Nooku Framework, do not seem to have gained much traction, seemingly fragmenting more an already limited pool of talented framework developers.

So we now ask, what does the future hold? Will another CMS be born of resignation, will it gain momentmum as did Joomla in forking Mambo, or will we be witness to yet another "dead end beta cycle". One thing we can be sure of, Amy Stephen' is definitely not happy about this!

All the editor can say is, why can't we just get along?

Disclaimer: As per the above, speculation creates confusion... people need to define not imply.

Adam,

The simple truth is that Louis has been contributing countless hours to the project for almost eight years. Have you considered that this takes a great toll on any person? I am surprised that Louis lasted that long and I'm even more surprised that Andrew is still with us (he's been around since Mambo). There's no conspiracy and no need to panic. As happens in all FOSS projects a contributor needs to step down for his own reasons. That's normal, that's human, that's cool and expected. BTW, many people have at times left the Joomla! CMS project. There's the Joomla! team honour roll: http://www.joomla.org/about-joomla/the-project/honor-roll.html Last time I checked (ten seconds ago) the Joomla! CMS still exists and grows strong. See? No reason to panic. People come and go. It's FOSS. That's how it works.

As to what the future holds, it's definitely many prosperous years for Joomla! Platform and Joomla! CMS. They are both huge, Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) projects. FOSS projects of their scale are greater than each of their contributors and even greater than the sum of their contributors. I'd recommend watching Ryan Ozimek's (former president of the OSM) keynote from any past Joomla! Day. You'll understand why.

Now, please: DON'T PANIC (imagine this in big, friendly letters) ;)

Cheers,

Nicholas K. Dionysopoulos

Nicholas,

My previous post is intended to be taken "tongue in cheek", I am well aware of the effort put in by both Andrew and Louis (also Amy Stephen as I did mention her as well) - just a light hearted (maybe cunning?) attempt to get some more information and maybe gentle slap on the hand to Andrew for keeping us in suspense for 2 days! Please don't take it seriously :)

Donald,

One mans truth is another man's misconception. In my opinion these type of projects "are" the sum of their contributors, not greater nor independent of them. In even putting forth the question of a project's longevity without contributors contradicts your statement of truth. A Statement like this implies that contributors are an infinite resource, that if one leaves another will be able to fill his/her place and operate to the full capacity that the previous contributor did. This is simply not true, and especially not true when thinking about people like Louis Landry and Andrew Eddie, these guys are not replaceable like you think of replacing a light bulb, to think otherwise is just plain disingenuous. If either one of them leaves it sets the project back, if both left it would probably set the project back by years. They are like the star players on a football team, and should be treated as such, not thought of as simple "contributors".

Hi Adam,

Your disclaimer is not accurate ;) You wrote:
"Disclaimer: As per the above, speculation creates confusion... people need

You should have written:
"Disclaimer: As per the above, speculation creates confusion... people need
to not speculate."

Please let Louis say his adieu/farewell in peace and don't turn this
thread into a soap opera.

FWIW, Andrew has never alluded to building a CMS completely from the
ground up *apart* from the Joomla project as your "or" statement implies.
There are ideas within the Joomla community about building a Joomla Next
application and those ideas are encouraged, rather than chased away.

@All,
That's it from me. I won't be responding to any more of these kind of
remarks in this thread. If anyone has questions/concerns about the
direction of the Joomla project, you're welcome to open up a new thread
with your questions. If you do open up a new thread, refrain from
speaking about other people's personal business. Contact them privately
if you'd like to know something about things like that. If they don't
respond, then take the hint and leave them alone (both privately and
publicly).

@Louis,
Thanks again for everything that you've done!

No problem, Adam! Sorry if I came across the wrong way to you too!

The thread is about Louis and it's not about anyone else or the project.
Let's keep it that way and give Louis an awesome farewell. He's been a
super star within Joomla and deserves a super star's send off :)

With that said, here's a small tribute to Louis and his work over the years.

Platform Commits: 307
Platform Additions: 413,165
Platform Deletions: 500,453

CMS Commits: 1,412
CMS Additions: 342,793
CMS Deletions: 267,954

[inline commentary: Wow! That's a LOT of code! :) ]

A toast to Louis Landry, a man of little words and a man of big time
contributions to Joomla. Louis, I think it's safe to say that your
biggest contribution to Joomla is not only the time you invested in Joomla
code, but the time you invested in people, as shown in this thread.

Adam -

OMG. That is hilarious. Thanks for making me laugh.

That was a pretty goofy comment for me to make and certain not the first time I've said something totally stupid. You know, I think I said the same damned thing the first time Andrew left. Then, Full-time Phil came in and said something less than friendly. Then Andrew came in and said something about how things never change.

I think the next day we did that three months of burning the place day but putting our souls back in the proper place with the license.

All of it. It's so true and all so ridiculous and all so not true and and not ridiculous, all mixed together. Just like our last seven or so years together, All together, even. AllTogetherAsAWhole, even. Why the heck not?

You know what, "thanks for the fish" just about sums it up. What else would a person say?

Thanks for the fish, indeed. Louis always has had insight well ahead of most.

In my opinion, you are both right. I am certain this was not a simple decision for Louis. Likely knowing he could leave and Joomla would continue was a comfort to him. He's got a lot of skin in this and leaving won't change his hope that it continues to thrive absent his continued involvement.

But. As was said in the other thread, there are some who are more equal than others.  You aren't going to replace a Louis or Andrew. Thankfully, we don't have to worry about Andrew. Mr. Joomla doesn't get to leave.  Ever. All exits lead to the front door. But, Louis's absence will leave a mark.

And, the beat goes on (I think I even saw him above.)

@Adam, I took your piece as satire - nothing more (had a good laugh).  The only thing missing was a quote from the Dread Pirate Roberts ;)

@Amy, I haven't had the pleasure of actually "leaving" yet, I've merely resigned from more positions I'd care to remember :)  I am due for some "shore leave" soon though, if only to preserve my sanity :P

Seriously though, and allowing the news to sink in even for me, there are many things that we take for granted today that are due to Louis; not least of which is that he and other icons like him can actually leave and the project will go on.  There are few people that can probably grasp the impact he has had on this project and, as a direct result, the world.  I am fortunate enough to be one of those people.  He is a good friend, a mentor and peer.  He should be inspiration to many - that you can pick yourself up following a major natural and humanitarian disaster, loosing virtually everything, and turn around and make a difference.

It is certainly fitting to honour his immerse heart, his vision, his contribution, his commitment, his tenacity and remembering that he has set aside much, sacrificed much, for the sake of others.

Many of you will have already seen this, but since this is the thread that started it all, here's a blog post on a conversation I had with Louis about moving on.

What I didn't say in that post is that Louis is the guy who first sent me a PM on the Joomla forums, asking me if I wanted to start working on unit test... starting the whole process of my involvement with this multifaceted beast we call Joomla!

I'm going to miss you, Louis.
