Launch modal popup from within model

In the model I use cached information to access a secure site.  If the site rejects the logon, or I don't have the cached info I need to launch a popup window from the remote site so they can log on.  It's obvious how to create an anchor which, when clicked, will show a modal window.  BUT how can I have my model just launch the modal window... is it possible?

Perhaps you could have your model load a javascript file that pops up the login dialog?

A model should *never* try to generate output.
Instead, throw an exception and catch it in the controller in order to
redirect to an appropriate page.
