Offline Mode

I've searched the documentation but can't find any information on this subject other than how to take a site offline.   Can anyone tell me how offline affects Google spiders, analytics etc?  It appears that Google can't even see the offline template page and returns an error which could be disastrous for an indexed site that is offline for even a short period.  Any information would help.

When I looked into this I found that the headers from the offline page send a 503 temporarily unavailable code to the bots. I believe this is the desired effect.  I would check what headers are actually sent though just to be sure.
