Just want to float the idea of pushing back future releases, after 2.5
(or maybe including) by one month. Reason is many uni people/students
are just starting to finish at this time of the year, and the same
point 6 months from now. Just as they are getting their free time, we
have the cutoff for new features to go into the CMS. So would it be
possible to consider pushing 3.0 into August 2012 and 3.1 into
February 2012. I know no time is a good time and someone will always
be affected, but I think there'd be some benefit in shifting the
releases so we can take advantage of vacation times. It also gets us
further away from US and AU end of financial year panic as well.

Just throwing it out there. Thanks in advance.

Andrew Eddie

Hi,
well, whatever proposal, your best time suggestion will only affect your
country or region. Planetary driven software, suc as Joomla is, cannot
rely on wishes coming from one or other GMT+/- constraint.
One have to be realistic, releases do not rely on US halloween, French
fte nationale, norIndependance day.

Not every user on planet live on your timestamp :)

Hi Andrew. I'm open to the idea. I would propose starting with 3.0,
not 2.5. We already have a commitment to release 2.5 in January and I
really don't want to miss that. It is only our second time-based
release, and I think it is important to establish that we can "make
the trains run on time".

However, there is nothing magic or written in stone about the specific
month, as far as I'm concerned. So, if February-August or
March-September is a better time, I have no problem with that.

For the February release, I'm ok (starting from 3.1), but for the
August one, I will be on holidays before and after. But it's just for
myself.

GMT is a bit different than a whole month ;)

Seems like many countries follow a similar pattern:

Speaking from the viewpoint of a current college student, my class schedule has been:

Fall Semester:
Start classes 1st week of August
End classes 2nd week of December

Spring Semester:
Start classes 2nd week of January
End classes last / 4th week of May

I'm rather in favor of this change because I like the idea of having some spare time around the release to actually use some of my free time to increase the amount of time I can contribute to the project. I understand college students are probably not the majority of participants of project-contributors, though, and in fact, many people may have less time around the December months due to many different holidays in that month.

+1 for me. I think it is a good idea because cramming things in at the end of the year is pretty tight for many regardless of what time zone, or where you live in the global map. Lets just make sure we don't release in March/April time. No one wants to put it in sync with the US tax season ;-)

Kindest regards,

We are a global project and there will always be times of the year which are too busy for one nationality or other so we are never going to find a quiet time for everyone .

Having said that we also have to acknowledge that the December/January period is "busy" for one reason or other for the majority, if not me. 8 + years of experience tells me that people's available time over this period is severely limited.

Pushing back by 1 month therefore gets my vote but as Mark said we really do want to stick to the January release for the next CMS release so how about aiming for Jan 31.

I just always assumed Europe was on vacation the entire month of August :) If it is, would that make August a bad month to release or not because most of the work would be done by then...

I agree with Mark that I'd like the 2.5 to come out this January, but then move with 3.0.
