pumping bicycle tires to avoid the gas pump

I was in Los Angeles and San Diego last week and it seemed like there were more bike commuters out on the road than when I was out there 8 months ago. I was in the same locations, and on this trip the temperatures were colder (early March versus June). I snapped a picture of the gas prices in LA last week, see attached.
