Title:     Senior Vice President for Political Affairs                                                               Status:  Exempt

 

Reports To:         President

 

General Description:

The League of Conservation Voters (LCV) works to turn environmental values into national priorities.  To secure the environmental future of our planet, LCV’s mission is to advocate for sound environmental policies and to elect pro-environmental candidates who will adopt and implement such policies. The SVP for Political Affairs develops and implements overall strategy for LCV’s political and public education programs in order  to support short term and long term organizational goals, leads staff to fulfill the organization’s mission, works with the President in visioning the organization’s role within the political landscape and utilizes multiple strategies to ensure effective and creative programs.  As an LCV Executive Team Member, maintains organizational oversight and contributes to the successful operation of the organization.

 

Specific (Essential) Responsibilities:

·         Directs programs and projects including electoral and public education campaigns; ensures successful implementation of programs.

·         Provides leadership and vision to the division staff to achieve results; manages division staff.

·         Analyzes effectiveness of programs. Provides reports to colleagues, president and the board of directors.

·         Monitors and analyzes the political landscape to determine programmatic goals and adjusts programmatic priorities appropriately.

·         Forecasts political trends; establishes LCV as a leader in new initiatives.

·         Works collaboratively with LCV Board of Directors, national and state groups and other nonprofits.

·         Interacts with State LCVs to build and strengthen the league movement.

·         Cultivates relationships with major donors and funders.

·         Keeps abreast of subject area through various means including developing and maintaining relationships with senior political contacts, participating in events, membership in organizations, etc.

·         Serves as subject matter expert to President.

·         Serves on Political Committee in executive capacity.

·         Develops and manages division budget.

·         Represents the organization to an array of groups including administration and elected officials, nonprofit community, political community, funders and the press.

·         Occasionally serves as spokesperson for the organization.

·         Other duties as assigned.

 

Supervision:

Director of Data and Analytics, Campaigns Director, Campaigns Assistant

 

Requirements:

·         Education:       College Degree in political science, communications, public relations, journalism, English or related field; graduate degree preferred.

 

·         Work Experience:       Ten years progressively responsible management experience in electoral campaigns and issue advocacy including experience in communications. Excellent management, program development and organizational skills. Demonstrated relationship with political opinion leaders, members of Congress and political party committees.

 

·         Skills:   Strong interpersonal and communications skills; working knowledge of federal election laws and laws governing 501(c)3 and 501 (c)4 operations; proficient with word processing and spreadsheet software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint preferred).  Knowledge of environmental issues desirable. Demonstrated ability to work under pressure and make deadlines.

 

·         Capabilities:    Commitment to bipartisanship; entrepreneurial focus; ability to work collaboratively; demonstrated relationship building skills; solid judgment; critical thinking skills; a sense of teamwork and community; ability to handle multiple tasks; highly organized.

 

·         Conditions:      Able to work hours in excess of stated office hours to get the job done; ability to travel.
