COMMUNICATIONS DIRECTOR WANTED FOR BOSTON-BASED PROGRESSIVE COMMUNITY-LABOR COALITION

POSITION DESCRIPTION
MASSUNITING seeks an experienced leader with strong oral and written communications skills to join our team as a Communications Director. This senior staff position will lead the communications team in strategic planning, message development, and traditional media outreach efforts. The successful candidate will also provide direct support to MassUniting coalition partners and related campaigns on an as-needed basis.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
· Execute earned and paid media plans for the coalition and labor/community partners
· Develop effective messaging and promote message discipline among allied organizations
· Manage media relations in coordination with community coalition spokespeople – from message concept to journalist pitches
· Identify and develop spokespeople for public speaking, including media interviews
· Write campaign talking points, speeches and press materials
· Produce campaign visuals – including leaflets, direct mail, posters and banners
· Work with New Media staff to create consistent web and social media content, along with related photo and video needs
· Work with preferred vendors to produce print, radio and television advertising, as needed
REQUIREMENTS
This is a senior-level position that requires five or more years of experience directing or supporting communications programs in a campaign/advocacy, union or newsroom setting. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to craft effective general public messaging from complex and often-abstract background material and research. Candidates must have experience pitching editors and journalists, with demonstrable success in placing and influencing stories across multiple mediums. Strong writing, verbal and analytical skills are key.
Familiarity with basic graphic design, photo or video production techniques desired. Journalism background, spokesperson training or staff/vendor management experience a plus. A combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work is generally performed in an office setting, but job may require work in the field or in other settings to perform the tasks required to complete assignments. This is a fast-paced work environment that requires long and irregular hours.
