NBCSL Communications and Media Internship

Non-paid/Internship Credit

 

The National Black Caucus of State Legislators (NBCSL) is a Washington, D.C.-based non-profit that operates as a national network and research clearinghouse for nearly 650 African-American state legislators across the country and the U.S. Virgin Islands.  NBCSL apprises its legislators of policy trends, model legislation, provides educational and training opportunities, and advocates on behalf of African-American legislators and their constituents at the federal level.

NBCSL is currently looking for two interns to support its work through communications and media research. NBCSL’s internship program provides undergraduate and graduate students with the opportunity to learn about the work of state legislators across the country and to support this work with traditional and new media tools. Interns are asked to work a minimum of 10 hours per week during the summer and/or fall semester.  Intern would work with NBCSL to set a regular schedule between the operating hours of 9am and 5pm, Monday-Friday.

 

NBCSL’s internship program is non-paid, but can be used for academic credit.

2013 Upcoming Internship Dates:

·         Summer Semester (3 months)

June – August

·         Fall Semester (3 months)

September – December

Duties May Include:

GENERAL COMMUNICATIONS

• Assisting with the development of internal organizational databases
• Drafting press releases, website content, e-newsletters, and other organizational communications as assigned

MEDIA

• Updating media outlet and contact databases
• Researching and selecting news articles about state-level policy action weekly    
• Monitoring media mentions and news clippings for the organization weekly

RESEARCH

• Providing research assistance to the Communications and Policy team on issues relating to under-represented and/or impoverished communities

Desired Qualifications/Skills:

• Driven Bachelors degree and Masters degree students in communications or related fields
• Relevant Communications Experience (1-2 years preferred)
• Excellent writing and editing skills
• Experience with social media, blogs, and web content development
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office products (Word, Power Point, Excel)
• Strong internet researching skills
• Excellent attention to detail
• Highly-Organized
• An interest in working with disenfranchised groups

Internship Evaluation

All NBCSL interns will be evaluated during the last two weeks of their internship. Evaluation criteria will center on deliverables for each support area (database, media, and online magazine). NBCSL interns will also be evaluated on professionalism, timeliness, overall attitude, and contributions to the organization. Interns will submit a 2-page summary report outlining their experience by the last day of their internship period.

Only candidates from the D.C./Maryland/Virginia area will be considered.
