Hi All,


I just posted this to another face painting list in answer to a question ab=
out whether everyone actually liked kids or not. I figured I'd share it wit=
h you all, as a way to wish you all a Happy Thanksgiving :o).


My answer was ...


YES! I LIKE KIDS ... well,=20






very much MOST of the time. Just spent the week working with kids (have bee=
n for 25 years), the past two nights painting them. I was just at the store=
 and this kid was rapping out this syncopated music number (and was pretty =
rhythmic and in tune, really) but I was out shopping to decompress, and I t=
urned to the lady in the aisle near me (at least ten aisles from the "music=
ian") and mumbled "Somebody shut that kid up!"=20


We laughed. I rarely say something like that, but it was a "1000%-patient-w=
ith-kids" week, and so. Home now, and Gordon Lightfoot is crooning away, an=
d, no kids here!!! :o)


But here's what's so so great: this is my first Christmas season face paint=
ing, so I'm working to build up my photo display. Thursday night, I was pai=
nting my friend's seven-year-old son, and he's a doll. In the middle of it =
all, we're talking and he asks: "Is Batman real?"=20


"Sure!" I said. (He'll find out sometime. Now is his time for magic.) "And,=
" I added, "so are fairies and all sorts of magical things. It's all real."


He happily kept getting turned into Santa; I happily kept painting.


The conversation rolled smoothly on. "Is Robin real?"


"Yep," I said.


Then: "How 'bout the Joker?"


(Oops. I haven't seen the movies, but I'm aware that that "Joker" is evil a=
nd pretty scary. I've got a seven-year-old just before bedtime here. Sooo .=
.. a bit of quick thinking on my butt [I paint sitting down :o))]


"Nooo ... the Joker is not real. He's just a made-up character ..." (Now I'=
m wondering what the follow-up to this will be--after, this little guy coul=
d pull out his "logic" and start down the road of "But you just said Batman=
 and Robin are real, so how could the Joker not be, etc., etc. ...")


But here's what he said: "That's right. The Joker can't be real because God=
 wouldn't make someone so bad."


Awesome. (Now of course, there are bad people. But for this seven-year-old =
boy in his safe loving home on an ordinary Thursday school night in Novembe=
r, why not a good world? Why not?)


And that's the beauty of kids. (And the essence of all of us, really.) They=
 start with the magic that is real. They're in a place where they can touch=
 the magic closely and frequently, every day.=20


Yes, I do love "kids." But really, it's just a name for a smaller and young=
er form of "people." And, mostly, I like 'em all. It's only meanness I can'=
t stand. Other than that, there's room for a lot of wide open love. For eve=
ryone.


Okay, I'm new here. Hello to everyone, and I've been reading this forum for=
 a few months (daily, addictively.) And a huge THANKS--well, thanksGIVING--=
to you all.

P.S. Right after that warm and wonderful exchange with the little boy, when=
 we were taking picture after picture (while he jumped and danced around li=
ke a maniac), one of the photos he wanted to take was of ... get this ... "=
Dead Face Paint Kid"! No kidding :o). He sprawled out on the floor with a S=
nowman design across his face and acted like a dead guy. I took the shot an=
d it's really funny. Guess it was still close enough to Halloween for gore.=
 We ended the night with him painting me and using his tube of fake blood a=
ll over my face.=20


Face painting is a GREAT JOB!!! :o)   Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
