Hi all,

In case anyone is on the lookout for a GSoC project to participate in,
the Astropy project is accepting applicants:
https://github.com/astropy/astropy/wiki/Google-Summer-of-Code-2013---Project-Ideas

I'm sure sure who yet has stepped up to be a mentor, but we have
several people locally on campus (myself included) who are developers
on Astropy and can work with you in person to get things started.
Students who like or want to learn Python, and with physics and
astronomy interests in particular should apply, but it is not
necessary either as there are some non-science-specific projects to
work on.

Thanks,

Erik

Hi everyone,

We decided to apply for the Google Summer of Code 2013 under the
Python organization (rather than independently), and I'm happy to
announce that the Python organization was officially selected this
year, which means students can now apply to work with us!

We've made a page with project ideas on the wiki:

https://github.com/astropy/astropy/wiki/Google-Summer-of-Code-2013---Project-Ideas

However, since this is our official projects ideas page, please do not
edit this page directly - instead, send me any comments/suggestions
for changes/additions.

We should be pro-active in seeking out students who might be
interested in working with us, so if you know students who might fit
the bill, please encourage them to check out our projects ideas page
and join the list! The deadline for applications is May 3rd, but they
should get in touch with us as soon as possible, as one essential item
in their application is to contribute a patch/pull request to Astropy,
so we need to co-ordinate this early.

I will shortly send out an announcement to the 'astropy' mailing list
to advertise our participation - once that email goes out, please feel
free to forward it to anyone you think might be interested.

Thanks!
Tom
