Looking Back and Studying Ahead:
Information From the International Jewish Genealogy Conference
and
Using Research Resources at Godfrey Library
The Jewish Genealogical Society of Connecticut will meet on Sunday,
September 18, 2011, at 1:30 pm, in Middletown. The program will be
held at Godfrey Memorial Library, 134 Newfield Street, and is open to
all.
The first part of the program will be a report by members who attended
the International Association of Jewish Genealogical Societies
Conference in Washington DC in mid-August. Over 1100 family
researchers from fourteen countries and fifty states came together to
hear speakers on a wide range of topics, use unique resources, and
network with other genealogists from around the world.
The second part of the meeting will be an opportunity to use an array
of resources in the JGSCT Library. Among the resources available is
the two-volume Yad Vashem Encyclopedia of the Ghettos During the
Holocaust, with information on more than 1,100 ghettos during the Nazi
period. Also available will be Alexander Beider’s three volumes on
Jewish surnames – Askenazic, and names from the Russian Empire and the
Kingdom of Poland. These are comprehensive works on the origins,
locations where they were found, and variations in spelling.
Godfrey is the only public library in Connecticut solely devoted to
genealogy. Its resources will be available for research after the
program.
Directions: From I-91, exit 22S onto Route 9 South. Exit 15 onto
Route 66 West (Washington Street). At 5th traffic light, turn right
onto Route 3 North (Newfield Street). The Library is ¼ mile on the
right. From I-95, take Exit 69 onto Route 9 North. Take Exit 15 and
follow above directions.
