Juxtapose, for example, the exquisite &amp;quot;Vilne, Shtot fun Gayst un Tmimes&amp;quot; with &amp;quot;Una Furtiva Lagrima&amp;quot;. I would like to suggest that the beautiful music of VILNE, composed by Alexander Olshanetsky in 1935(?), might have been modelled upon that of the poignant UNA FURTIVA LAGRIMA (from L&#39;Elisier D&#39;amore), composed by Gaetano Donizetti a century earlier (1832). Jews in lovely ווילנע(Vilne)/וילנה(Vilna)/Wil no/Vilnius/Вiльня(Vilnia)/Wiln a/Viļņa/Вильнюс... did know BEL CANTO operas.

  I agree with John that Shostakovich did not have any Jewish ancestry. He &lt;br&gt; was closely connected socially and professionally with a number of &lt;br&gt; prominent Jews. When I was in college, I did some research on his &lt;br&gt; Jewish-themed music, including the reaction in the Yiddish and &lt;br&gt; Anglo-Jewish press, but unfortunately I can&#39;t find the paper I wrote.
