On Thursday, October 29, Harvard Hillel will host a special visit with Julie Geller '97, a professional singer/songwriter of folk and Jewish music (check out www.juliegeller.com).  Julie will conduct a workshop on music and spirituality from 5 – 6:15 p.m., and then will perform a free concert at 8 p.m.:

Julie Geller Workshop

When: Thursday, October 29, 5:00 – 6:15 pm

Where: Harvard Hillel

From Hineini (Presence) to Lech Lecha (Trust):

Opening Ourselves to the Endless Stream of Creativity Around Us
What do our forefathers have to teach us about being artists?  Lots, it turns out!  In this workshop, we will look to the Torah for guidance on becoming present to our art and having the courage to let our creations lead us.  Additional topics we will touch upon are: how to create time and space for your art, the importance of respecting your work, being honest with your work, and working from the unconscious.

**Julie Geller in Concert**

When: Thursday, October 29, 8:00pm

Where: Harvard Hillel

What:  With Julie Geller’s beautiful voice and affecting lyrics, she aims for nothing less than to bring love and healing into the world through her words, music and teaching. Playing a unique combination of original folk and original Jewish music, Julie sings the truth of her experience with unflinching honesty and warmth. Her music has the power to remind us who we are and who we want to become.

I hope you’ll be able to attend the workshop, the concert, or both.  And -- bring your friends!

Please let me know if you have any questions, or would like further information.

Thanks!

 ~Michael

****************************

Dear Friends:

I am very excited to be returning to Harvard Hillel to play a concert and teach a workshop next Thursday, October 29, at 8:00pm.

For me, this is an exciting homecoming.  I graduated from Harvard College in 1997 and have made a career as a singer/songwriter of folk and Jewish music and a teacher and coach for other artists and seekers.

One of the highlights of my many hours spent at Harvard Hillel as an undergrad was the monthly coffee shop that we used to run together with homeless people on Sunday nights in the Ben Zion Gold Dining Hall. We would all, students and guests, eat dinner together and then enjoy the open mic.  This was in fact one of my first gigs, and I can tell you unequivocally that I was completely terrible!  But that was OK, because it was about something so much bigger than that. It was about human dignity and all of us having the courage to share something, on and off the stage.  It wasn’t about perfection; it was about connection.

So, for me, it is a joy to be returning to Harvard Hillel.  As humans, we like to give back to people and organizations that help us and this is one small way for me to do that.  Hillel was a home for me during my college years, and for that I am grateful.

So, I hope you’ll consider coming to the concert – and I promise that I’ll sound better than I did the last time I played at Hillel!

See you there!

Julie
