We left St. Augustine behind this morning and headed just eleven miles north on the ICW to Pine Island. We decided to go inside so that we could meet Jennifer and Mark on Starlet, another Nordhavn 46. They are just starting their cruising life, heading down to the Bahamas for their first step. It will be good to see them again. I'm sure they will be loaded with questions. It is still pretty cool out this morning, but a little later I will drop the dinghy and put our our new collapsible crab trap for the first time. Maybe crab for dinner tonight!

St. Augustine was a really nice place to visit. This is the oldest city in what is now the USA, and was the place to be for the winter at the turn of the century. If you were one of the millionaires of the day, you probably spent some time here. It is a big tourist area with mobs here on the weekends.

If the weather holds, we will head up to Fernandina Beach on Monday. We discovered that Charleston is the place to be in April, so we will probably start making day hops outside to get there this month.

Monday, April 04, 2011 10:05:17 AM Location: Fernandina Beach, FL Latitude is 30 degrees 40.452 minutes north. Longitude is 81 degrees 28.168 minutes west. No recent weather observation is available. We left Pine Island early yesterday and a rising tide. It was a good thing because this anchorage is about 1/2 as deep as charted. We sat in the mud during the night! And, the bar at the entrance read zero feet as we left. The tide was about two feet before high tide. UGH. Not a recommended anchorage for boats with a draft over four feet. The ICW north was reported to have shoaling in one area, but we went through at high tide and never saw less than 13 feet. So it was a slightly worry some, but good passage up to Jacksonville. As we approached Jacksonville we stopped to see Jennifer and Mark on Starlet. About two years ago they traveled over to St. Petersburg by car to see Jenny and understand more about Nordhavn 46's. We chatted for the day and I set off for Mexico the next day. Well, late last year they bought Starlet, a Nordhavn 46 with a flybirdge and they have been getting ready to take her on a trial run down to the Bahamas. It was a really nice visit, except I did some damage to Jenny getting into the slip. So we will stop at a good boatyard near Savannah on our way north and get some gel coat work done. UGH!!!! After the visit with Starlet we headed up to the St. Johns river and caught a nice outgoing tide. We saw 9.5 knots as we zoomed out into the Atlantic. With a bright sun, flat ocean, and 70 degrees, it was a really nice passage. I enjoyed running Jenny on her autopilot again. Boy what a pleasure. Melinda enjoyed it too. No seasickness or worries! This is good, because the ICW is just too shallow from here up to North Carolina to use it. As we came into the Fernandina Beach anchorage, two guys in kayaks gave us a shout out. After we got anchored and settled, they paddled over. They are two guys I met when I was here the summer of 2009 writing Jenny's Journey. Cool. We plan to go out to the Green Turtle this week to catch up! This morning I plotted our day hops up the coast of Georgia to Charleston, SC. The longest passage is 60 NM, so we are not pushing it. We will spend some time in Savannah, skip Beaufort SC, Hilton Head, etc. on this set of passages. We do want to see Savannah and Charleston though, so will spend some time there.
