I say we should aim for Jenkins devroom in FOSDEM!

to Jenkins Dev

We had a significant concentration of the Jenkins people in FOSDEM this
year, and I think everyone who were there really loved it.

We were just chatting in IRC and we started wondering if maybe this year
we should aim for running our own Devroom. A devroom in FOSDEM is like a
conference track, and it takes about 6-10 talks to fill a day.

So the main question here is if there's enough interest mainly from our
friends in Europe to go do a talk. We obviously still need to find out
what the criteria is for getting a devroom, but according to the last
year's schedule, call for devrooms go out around in September [1].

I think this is a great idea! It's possible to propose a "one day devroom"
if you are concerned about not having enough content for two days.

Basically you need to propose an interesting topic -- and there's
no doubt that a one day (or even two day) Jenkins devroom would be
such an interesting topic that any room will be filled to capacity.

Having organized two devrooms last year the big lesson learned was:
do not try to squeeze the talks into being too short (30m). The talks
should really be 45m (and maybe even with a 15m break in between).

Regards,

p.s. Thanks again for the Jenkins sticker you gave me at FOSDEM :)

p.p.s. Next year I know I'll want to be in 3 devrooms at once! :-P

It's great to learn that there are people here who have experience in
organizing devrooms!

Are you willing to do a talk? I'm mainly worried about having enough
talks lined up, as opposed to filling the room with audience.

I probably would...

I'm also optimistic there will be enough talks. The key
thing to do now is form a committee of volunteers that
will submit the devroom request (when the call for devrooms
opens) and then review the talks.

Here's the timeline we had for the Free Java devroom last year:

I don't think we should be too worried about filling the time with talks, I
think we can fill the schedule with more than just regular talks.

Some ideas:

* In-real-life office hours: Hands on developing a Jenkins plugin with KK
* Paper cuts hackathon: Spend an hour collectively hacking on fixing a
pre-determined list of minor bugs that can make big improvements
* Group discussions: possible topics include:
- Further UI improvements
- Killing old backwards compatibility/refactoring core
- Improving plugin discoverability/quality, etc

I can think of plenty more ideas, but you get the gist. The nice thing IMO
about a dev room is that you don't have to run it like a mini conference the
whole time, we have some flexibility AFAIK to "make it our own."

We should also be able to reach out to all the prospective JUC Antwerp
attendees and encourage them to join.

My main concerns would actually be staffing a table and the dev room with
people :)

Hello,
I wanted to apply for a talk at JUC in Antwerp, so now I am interested in talking at FOSDEM.

At some point this is offtopic, but - Is there any plans for organizing such meeting in Baltic countries in near future? There would be some attendants for all ower the Scandinavia at the minimum...

I'm a little bit disappointed that JUC Antwerp was cancelled, especially after the time I put to convince my boss to pay it for me, but I understand that those conference cost a lot in time and resources.

Also, it wasn't possible for me to go to the San Francisco JUC (that is very far away from Belgium).

But I will really happy if there will be dev room at Fosdem!

Maybe it is also possible to organize one JUC by year, but at a different country each time, to allow most of the people to come.

@ Sébastien
Dry your eyes mate ;-)  Please consider the Jenkins CI User Event in Copenhagen on September 7th as an alternative to Antwerp.

In the temrs of location changes -  I fully agree. These meetings should be made more are covering as nowadays IT companies related to any kind of software engineering havimg more than 200 employees uses CI..

Between this thread and the reaction in Twitter, it sounds like
there's enough interest to do this.

In FOSDEM 2012 we seemed to have enough people coming in and out. If
we have the equivalent level of participation, we should have no
problem staffing the table. I don't know what involves in staffing the
devroom, but JUCs normally just have one person in a room.

I think we can count on myself, Nicolas, and Tyler to come. And I
believe at least one guy is coming from Tokyo.

I wonder if FredG, domi, and orrc are planning to come this year, as
well as anyone else willing to help staff the table and other
organization work?

Unfortunately, I'm not available at that time.
It will be for Fosdem I think.

To quote myself from Twitter: "@jenkinsci count me in! #fosdem" :)

I remember that the devrooms at FOSDEM normally had 1-2 guys
who kept an eye on the schedule and held the doors shut. That's about it.

although I already gave my OK to Tyler via Twitter - I must sadly say that I will not be able to join this time…
…I'll be in Australia for January, February and March - which is not to bad too, I guess :)
So I'm really sorry :(
