Good morning all:

I feel its time for me to become familiar with jb 4.x.  I have downloaded and run the install package but now am in unfamiliar territory.

My jb 3 used to have several programs listed in the programs file when installed, but 4.x only shows jshell and jdc, neither of which produce any results when I click on them.  I remember seeing some documentation on activation but can't remember where it was now.  Can some-one give me quick push in the right direction to get this up and running.

Well, I have jb 4.x re-installed, have jlicense and jslim running, and telnet activated.  Guess I need to set up a user account now so I can log in

Stupid question (is it ?) ?

If you are migrating forwards from 3.4 - why are you only moving to 4.X when 5.X is the current version?  Aren't you better off making the jump to the very latest and greatest release?

I really don't know except I heard that 5.x is 64bit and I clients whose main computers are still 32 bit.  Having said that, I only have one client who is upgrading , and that is from PICK R83, so I guess I could insist that he get a 64 bit os.

Just as an aside to this, I attempted to install 4.x on my 64 bit system.  Its Windows 7, HOME PREMIUM.  I discovered that this system does not have the "users and groups" under computer management, because MS didn't think anybody with a home version would need it.  What does the group recomend as an OS today?

Windows Server 2008 is the proper OS for jBase 5 (if you have to run on
Windows), but I guess it will run in the business editions of Windows 7
(though there is still a 10 user limit I think)

I've not played too much with v5, but the world is going 64 bit and I
can't see the value of migrating to v4 of jBASE - you might as well stay
on 3.4 for 32 bit...

Just my thoughts...

Regards
Simon

Thank-you for your thoughts.  I too, would much rather stay with 3.x as this is what "I grew up with", but apparently one cannot purchase licenses for this version any-more.  3.x runs on xp-pro just fine for me, and perhaps I might yet be able to license this version.  I think I will put in another request.  After all, its just a number in return for cash, right?  I don't see any reason for Jbase company to worry about supporting it.

That way, I can do all my developement on my in-house computer and know everything will work when it comes time to install at clients.

I would suggest you move to 5.  Once installed and running your databasic code and you know on 3.4 should be v similar...

The new stuff in 5 is there only if you want to use it...

Simon,

3.4.x will run on Win 7 32 bit (business/ultimate) with no problems.

I have been holding out too since I do not want to force all my clients to buy a 64 bit system in a bad economy.

For developers, Windows 7 "Professional" should work as well. This is a step between Home and Business. I migrated most of my systems recently from XP to W7Pro and have had no related issues with any DBMS product.  Unfortunately I haven't installed jBase yet but that will be done soon as well.

Since jBase v5 is a 64bit platform, you need to stick with v3 or 4 for 32bit.  So my next install is v4/32/W7.

I have been running jBase 5 on various platforms for about 3 years now (since I also teach to banking groups, I was using 5.1 before 5.2 came out)

I have it on both RHEL 5.6 and Centos 5.8 as well as on Win7Pro(64 bit)

Not a big deal on any, although 'nix installations are a LOT easier than Windows.

Biggest difference is that jBase now runs its own ODBC Server/Client instead of Attunity used on 3.x and 4.x.

The code changes I had to make in moving from 4.x to 5.2 were minor (if any). Biggest thing in any version migration is to remember to set all your environment/configuration variables to match your prior version.
