For those who are interested, I saw Frank Vignola and his quintet the
other night in Lafayette, IN. What an incredibly talented group of
musicians he has. They played a lot of Django, or Django-inspired
pieces along with some original tunes. Frank doesn't seem to get a lot
of mention on this list, but what a fantastic player he is. I'd urge
everyone to go see him if he comes anywhere near you.

Although Frank is currently playing Gypsy style jazz, he has some earlier
recordings in a much more contemporary/smooth jazz vein as well. I am
sure he can play many styles well. He is a great player.

Frank & group were at the Ark in Ann Arbor last Thursday. I was at the show and would echo Jeff's comments: Frank Vignola is one phenomenal player. His ability to execute clean notes at breakneck speed is impressive and that turn's peoples' heads. But what I love most is his strong sense of melody and the melodic lines he weaves into his improvised solos.

Django-style music is what he plays but one doesn't have to be a dyed-in-the-wool Django fan to appreciate Frank Vignola's playing. If you have the chance to see him in person, you will be glad you did!

Couldn't agree more, Jeff. I saw him about a couple of years ago in Savannah, GA. He's really got it all...and a very nice guy. Told me all about his (well worn) Benedetto.

He plays some nice stuff on a Joey DeFrancesco album, called
Goodfellas.

He has some educational materials over at www.truefire.com as well.

Wasn't he part of Les Paul's ensemble at the Iridium?

Yea, Frank Vignola is a great player. I'm just not into the
Gypsy jazz stuff, but no denying the swing and chops req'd
to play it well.

Cheers,
JV
