I play a Gretch Historic Series G3900 archtop. I replaced the floating pick up with a kent Armstrong (which did cut out some feedback and improved the sound overall). It has a beautiful tone both plugged in and unplugged, but no matter what amp it is plugged into when not being played there is a feedback hum always occurring. I was advised to look at using a pre-amp perhaps Fischman. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks, Carol Eder

A simple and cheap although not pretty solution could be to simply put some
low-tak masking tape over the top F hole, if this works but you want
somthing better looking you can buy feedback plugs see:
http://www.dougsplugs.com/.

You may also find a closed speaker cabinet has less feedback than an open
back one, and try using an amp stand rather than putting the amp on the
floor. Also a good EQ pedal or rack unit may help in reducing some of the
problematic frequencies.

Has anybody any experience or options regarding the Ibanez AF125?

I'm not sure I understand the problem. Are you having a hum problem, a
feedback problem or a feedback problem that sounds like a hum. Things to
check:

1.If you turn on the amp, and turn up the volume without the guitar plugged
in, is there noise.
2. If you insert a guitar chord and the guitar, with the volume off and then
turn up the amp, is there noise?
3. If you change chords, does the noise change?
4. If you use a very long chord, move the guitar far away from the amp and
keep the volume low on the amp, is there still noise? You may need a second
person-one person to strum the guitar and anothe to listed closely to a low
amp.
5. Does the noise change as you move around--in front of the amp, to the
side of it,
behind it, etc.
6. Is the noise low pitched or high pitched?

To interpet these: If the noise is present without a guitar..the amp has an
issue.
If the noise changes when you switch chords, you may have a fault in a
chord.
If the noise is present with a quiet amp, it is probably not feedback. If
the noise changes as you move around the amp it is likely feedback. If the
noise is steady and
low pitched, it is probably not feedback.
If the hum is approximately a concert Bb (on the A string)it is 60 cycle
hum, if it is approximately a B (open B string) it is 120 cycle hum. These
both derive from 60 cycle
AC power.

So, let us know, is it hum, feedback, or both?

Yes,__
I had an Artcore AF125 a few years ago, I sold it on consignment.
A very nice box, had a comfortable and fast neck. For me the humbuckers were a bit too "hot" for my taste.
If you're looking for a good jazz archtop for comping, chord melody, BeBop, and other arch top, acoustic-electric sound, this guitar is a very good choice. You can very welll take this box on jobs -- in fact, I was complimented a few times in public on jobs with this box -- it is also a good looking box.
It comes packaged with a metal and wooden bridge. I'd experiment by trying each bridge and assessing the sound you want. The metal bridge (similar to a tune-o-matic) definitely gives more sustain, but less "woody" sound. There are advantages and disadvantages for each bridge --- check it ot for yourself.

Hi John, I have an Ibanez archtop that I was always pleased with but
I've always hated their idea of an appropriate logo [ or whatever
they call that travesty on the head stock ] for an archtop guitar. My
PM 100's logo is different from the one in the link but just as bad.
It's like they hired a firstcalligraphy year design students or
something. I guess it's somehow tied up with their brush based
calligraphy, which I love, but when you stylize it it looses alot.
That said, I've played one like the one pictured, in the 450.00 range
and it played and sounded pretty good.

Hey John, if you're not kidding about hand discomfort..... tumeric,
ginger, bromelain. It's helping the osteo-yuk in my shoulders to the
point where there is no discomfort in normal motion of any kind. That
was not the case before I started the tumeric. That came from someone
on this list but I forget who. Maybe you? If so thanks. I been taking
tumeric caps for years for digestive tract help but just a few caps a
day. Now I'm taking 4 to 6 caps at least twice a day along with one
of ginger and some bromelain each time I take the tumeric. I guess
the bromelain helps with the absorption but I need to read more about
it. It just know the level 8 or 9 pain is gone for months now.

I have a AS73 which is basically a 335 copy.  Very nice guitar.  I really like it.  Makes me want to try some of the more expensive 335s out there, but for the money, it can't be beat.  I think it is great as a jazz box.

You can hear the guitar at this link.

Sometimes is seems that companies can't figure out who their
demographic is. Movie companies are a good example. I don't think
many 15 year old kids buy DVDs of movies. Yet the seem to constantly
pander to that exact market. Hey how about those half diminished
chords...... what a marvel of useful ambiguity. Wheeewwww, I was
straying from the path again. Now I feel better. Hope things are
smooth over your way John.

Hmm, doesn't that belong underneath a strong dominant?

LOL, Chris I have to admit..... I was thinking of chord tricks but
your idea is funnier. And it took that exact, perfect, amount of time
for the light to come on. Very good, Bobby is thinking "I knew that
right away". John is going `oh no not again,' My best to the three
of you.

Isn't that harmonized with the paraplegic minor scale?

Isn't that harmonized with the paraplegic minor scale?

-
Actually, the Malady MInor has an incurable affect on scales, especially itchy and of a rash type --
possible cure could involve the Hormone Minor: take tow choruses and call me in the morning....
