Bill Evans jazzwaltz Very early. I recorded this for my sologuitaralbum "Two days in august" some years ago!
(Itunes, Amazon) This is a new version! Arrangement and improvisation as usual!
I really like this tune since i heard it live with Charles Loyd and swedish pianist Bobo Stenson!

Goran,

I try not to pipe in unless I have something positive to say but I think in this case I am going to jump in anyway. I think your arrangement of Bill Evans tune “Very Early” is very nice and the playing is technically very nice as well but I just don’t care to hear this tune played that fast and certainly not with the chunky style chords you used in this arrangement. To me this is basically a beautiful, melodic tune that doesn’t need to be jazzed up. Actually I shouldn't be jazzed up. Since it was written by a jazz player you’d think Bill Evans would have jazzed it up if it called for that but I have never heard him play it like that. I’d love to hear you play this again slower and more meaningfully which I know which your talent you can do easily.

It’s also worth considering playing the tune slow and rubatto and then going into easy double time with it but I would make that double time more implied than actually played.

BTW, your chord soling is very interesting.

Otherwise, thanks for sending this out and continued success on your recordings.

Once again, no offense meant by any of this. I fully recognize that you play wonderfully.

Brian

Thank you Brian for your comment! It's a good thinking to at first make a
complex arrangement as this and then just play the tune with more air and
use the advanced parts spontaneous! However it's my style to play chords
and basslines with the melody and improvisation and sometimes it maybe can
be "to much"! In my new trioalbum (Mixing it just now) I open up more for
the bass and the drums!
/Goran

Goran,

You have a point in saying that your style is essentially a chord plus bass
lines style of playing. I think having a recognizable style is a good thing
but in this case it's worth recognizing that the song has a recognizable
style as well and it is worth considering this when you perform it. I am
not saying I am right about all of this but I will say that for my own
playing there are some songs I will not really even attempt to play as jazz
pieces. Somewhere Over The Rainbow is a great example. It just doesn't
help that tune to start swinging away on it so I don't. I'd rather play it
rubatto and then follow that by playing it in time but that's about as far
as I go with a tune like that. Very Early is the same way. Even Bill Evans
doesnt get too worked up on this piece.

I know that you definitely feature the walking bass line thing in your
playing but if you are at all concerned about how you are presenting
yourself you might want to think of playing something like Very Early in a
more melodic fashion as a sort of change of pace piece for you. As it is
there is always someone in the audience who will be more drawn to that than
anything else you do. As it is its very hard to play a lot of ballads on a
live gig but one a set can be very nice. You just have to program it into
how your whole set is laid out.

Otherwise, as I have said your playing is wonderful and I only mention this
as a way seeing that you get a better hearing out of your listening
audience.

In the meantime thought I am definitely still listening.

Very impressive! Excellent arrangment.

The only thing I might add is that as I listened to it, I wanted to hear some of the notes, particularly in the bassline more clearly. I couldn't quite grasp the rhythm at times. That's not a criticism of the time ... rather, it was a desire on my part to hear the piece played a little more slowly so that I would have a little more time to appreciate the nuances. But, sometimes, I feel that way the first time I hear something new, and it's only later that I appreciate the piece up to full tempo.

Great work!

This tune's melody doesn't really set well on guitar in C major - too many notes drop down into the lower register strings, which will severely limit your chord choices and muddy the sound. Sounds good as a bossa in D major - playing open bass strings with triads on top. In D maj. or a higher key, the lowest melody note will fall on the B string.
